Wow, folks, it's been a long time since I've been able to access IFSJA. A lot's happened since my last post. We got reassigned to San Antonio, TX, came home found our house had been broken into and lived in (it's really way out in the country), Someone tried to hotwire my Suburban which was on blocks, battery out and tires off (go figure:confused: ) AND last night, the outdoor spigot showed signs of leaking at the country property. Inspection showed a rotted pipe and it was 0200 in the wee hours of the a.m. Such is life. The good note is we bought a beautiful 2866 sq.ft. house in the West Creek area of San Antonio and it's a charm. just what the wife always wanted. I prefer the country, despite all the little problems that crop up.
Big question though and I will search the archives, but on a quick note, which engine would be a fairly easy swap for the 'lunched' 360 I have in the Grand Wa??
Anyway, it's great to be back.

Looks like I've been away for too long. I don't even remember how to get my avatar back OR figure out what this stuff is at the bottom of my msg. Wierd!
Thanks for the welcome home, I appreciate it a great deal. As for meeting up in Ouray, I have to get the GW up and running first. If I had the house finished (it almost is), I'd ask opinions on a wrench a thon at my country house here in Young County TX. Might be able to at least get the GW drivable. I've given thought to a 6 cylinder and am only concerned (mainly concerned) with which engine would be closest to a direct swap w/o having to do a lot of adapting. Yes, I KNOW another 360 would be ideal, but mine needs a rebuild, I think, since I'm pretty sure the bearings were 'lunched' after a bit of sabotage. Seems, if you remember my mentioning it, that some former inmates at the county Jail where I worked, took offense that I kept them locked up. After he/him/her/she/them/they got out of jail, a lot of dirt was dropped down my oil filler tube. Almost didn't get home and only realized something was wrong as I was coasting into the front drive. I am definitely NOT a qualified 'wrench' and can use all the help I can get. I would love to be able to :drivin: the GW as would my better half. Hey, even my 14 year old is addicted to Jeeps.
Thanks again for the welcome back,
LarryD

:( :( Just finished opening up the 360. NOT GOOD! Spun #2 rod bearing, over heated #1 rod bearing. cracked and scored #6 piston. Water was in the coolant when I drained it so I suppose it could be a blown head gasket. Only there's no indication that is so. pistons slipped right out. only one valve had a bit of burring and that came off with a jewelers file. Water pump shot, timing gears shot. no bent valves. PO NEVER cleaned under the SJ and it is going to be a chore. I just wish I could get it up and running by Thanksgiving. Doesn't look like that is going to happen though. It's just me at the Lackland AFB auto hobby shop and that is getting expensive.
Does anyone know of a good auto machine shop in the San Antonio area?? I need to get the beast cleaned and mic'd.
I'll take all the 'good lucks' I can get.

Have a good one while you can still laugh about it.. Don S..
Corn Ethanol: Our government is hoodwinking Americans and making a few people rich. We have a 50 cent per gallon tariff against importing ethanol and subsidize our ethanol refiners 54 cents per gallon with our tax dollars. And using Corn Ethanol is driving food prices up! Have you been to the grocery store this week? Another case where corporate lobbyists make the laws!

Airman? Oh My! What has been dropped on my head? That's Semper Fi, Do or Die, Gung Ho Marine that I am. :D :D
Actually, I do feel kinda like flying right now. Flying after the $$ I can see slipping away. That is of course unless I can drop in something a little more sane. My Machinist brother and his machinist son have taken a big interest in the GW. Maybe a bribe of a steak and some beer might bring them down from the Waco area.
Wish me luck, guys and gals.

:o Yeah, I know, my daughter said 'HOT PINK' was the color to paint the engine. Where did I go wrong??
Anywho, can someone give me an idea what the engine color was for the 1984 AMC 360? Mine looks black but I'd like to lighten it up a bit. No, Not pink! Need an idea fairly quick if possible because the shop is going to paint it for me.
Thanks alot folks.
