Yep! Here was my list of problems...

4wd switch didn't work
Cruise control didn't work
Defroster/heat flap didn't work

What was the fix? One 8 inch section and one 2 inch section of 3/16's vaccuum hose. The vacuum-ball had a hose missing that comes from the back on the manifold. From the vacuum ball, it goes to a canister on the fender (I have TWO of those canisters) One of the lines on the canister goes to the 4wd switch, and the other one goes to the air controls on the dash smile.gif

And somehow the Cruise control works now too.. I figure it was a vacuum issue obviously.

NEW PROBLEMS :

The compressor I bought at the junkyard.. was JUNK. No oil in it... seized up.. and the valves in it were bad too. I was hoping to rebuild my old one with the parts of the junkyard one. Nope. MY buddy says the valves aren't trustworthy looking enough. So I STILL don't have A/C :(

LIGHTS?! Where are my dummy lights?! I have the "Fasten Belts" light on the bottom left of the two lights there.. but the top one, I don't know what it is. The two on the right pod.. I don't know what they are either. I'm not 100% sure, but I think my 4wd works now. I was able to shift my 229 into low. But I would imagine one of those lights would be a 4LOCK or 4WD light.... and maybe a CRUISE to let me know its on?

The 3 round gauge style has only 4 dummy lights...

X - dunno Speedo X - dunno
X - Stbelt Speedo X - dunno

can someone fill in the "dunno blanks?" Maybe I just have burned bulbs?

According to my '84 owner's manual:

Top left--brake (Low brake pressure or parking brake engaged.)

Bottom left--seatbelt (Got it.)

Top right--blank

Bottom right--4WD, NP208 only.

How come we NP229 owners don't get a light? :( Front axle, lo range, something...

Top left brake, bottom left seat belts, top right emergency drive, bottom right 4wd..

Thanks for the pics, John!

Snake, I guess the "lenses" are there, but we don't get to have the "lights"...

You could try to rig up a switch on the front axle disco to trigger the 4WD light, then silkscreen a "cruise control" lens to replace the E-drive one, and hook it up to the cc circuit...

Wow! That was just what I was looking for actually... the pictures of the gauges like that.

So... my 228 had a 4-wheel light.. it was Green, it had a Cruise light too.. green. This was an 86 model.

How come we 229 owners don't have a light?!?! How hard would it be to wire it up? Maybe we all just have burnt bulbs and its supposed to light up?

What would it take to get a "Cruise" light wired up? I think I'd use the E-drive lens for it.

The 229 does have a light. Mine was burnt, and that's prolly whats wrong with yours. It a PIA to get at though. :(

Could be...the book said "Model 208 only". What year did they change instrument clusters? I'm just wondering if that's the difference.

My 84 did not originally have a 4wd light. It had most of the wiring left over from earlier years, but the earlier model 229 did not have a switch on it. A later model 229 with the switch/plug at the bottom was swapped in at some point. I then rigged up a proper wiring harness that would connect to the switch on the t-case using an old "transmission wiring harness" from an 83 Wag with a 208. I had to change the plug on the orange wire that goes to the t-case, as the 229 has a 2-pronged plug, and the 208 had a socket-cap type of plug (like on the Q-trac, I believe).

Look under the hood in the middle, right up against the firewall. There's a wiring harness that will have Orange, Red, White, Black wires going to the bulkhead connector. The other part of the harness connects to your Neutral start/backup switch (Red, White, Black) and T-case switch (Orange). If you're missing the orange wire, then it did not come equipped with a switch.

Good Luck!

Thanks for the info, Coley!

I was going to suggest looking at the xfer to see if it had a switch (on the rear output housing, just below and to the right of the fill plug), bit it would be much easier to look under the hood..
