Found an 80 J10 at a local "salvage" yard, but it had the manual transmission. It is a 1980 model. I am hoping it is a 208, that way I can snatch it up for next to nothing. If it is a 208, does any modding have to be done to get it to mate with an auto? Thanks.

well, if it is manual hubs, it is the 208. The only way it is a 219 is if it has an automatic trans. (unless someone swapped it) but likely it is a 208. On the back of the transfercase there is a round aluminum tag w/ the model stamped on it, shoudl either say AM208 or J208.I have been told that the 208 will mount in place of the 229(I haven't done this so It could be false). Make sure you get the transmission floor hump cover and the shiufter w/ all the linkages(assuming this is for your 85GW). Craig

I guess I will have to look further... It had the hump cover laying on the floor, but someone has taken the shifter and associated linkages with it, along with the top of the transmission. I cant get underneath to check as it is wheeless. I would have to ask the guy with the monster fork lift to turn it over so I could remove it. If I get the T/C, am I sol in finding the shifter and linkage somewhere else?

80 J10 with a Manual trans = NP208.

I would think that you would be able to find the shift linkage from another jeep or from a member here. Never pass up a good deal. If the price is right on the 208 take it and run(don't look back) the linkage is something you can get shipped to you if needed for minimal costs. The transfercase however would take alittle more shipping to warrant you passing on a cheap deal now. If the trans hump cover is there grab that also.

I have some questions also. Is the 208 better than the 219 if so then why is it better? Will it swap in place of a np 219?
sorry not to awnser any questions just curious myself.
thanks

With all this mentioning of the trans cover... Will I need to take my current one off?

Crazyjeepman, won't the 208 shifter and linkage from the manual jeep work in the auto jeep if you transfer the small coverplate that the 208 shifter mounts too? I know you need different linkage from the 229 to the 208 but thought the manual 208 linkage woudl work. If not I guess he would have to get a 208 underseat lever w/ linkage form a 208 equipped automatic rig? Craig
