View Full Version : Anyone install MSD Dizzy w/ TFI?
Anyone install MSD Dizzy w/ TFI? I did the TFI and now the vacuum advance on my distributor is dying. Since the vacuum advance costs $75 from the dealer, I'm thinking about upgading the distributor and upgrading to the MSD ignition box. I would like to know if anyone has used the MSD 6A box with the MSD distributor. Will it work with my current TFI spacer and larger cap, or do I need to use the MSD cap and spacer? Also would like to know if spark plug wires will need to be replaced. Thanks

well i have both but i don't have the TFI. it works really well for me and i've always heard if you upgrade like that, it will throw more juice out to the plugs. to make sure that this new upgrade is utilized, you need to upgrade the plug wires so that all the juice can be given to your plugs. smaller wires reduce the amount of charge and thus do not give you what you paid for. i know there is an easier way to say what i just did but i'm strugglin' from the night before. please forgive me.

RSW,
I used MSD 6A box with stock dizzy - not much difference between MSD and Duraspark box.
Just installed HEI dizzy - and it works pretty well. The distributor cost $220.

I use the MSD6A with the TFI upgrade including cap and rotor on the stock distributor. I recommend regapping the spark plugs to about .045.
If you already have the TFI upgrade you do not have to use MSD cap and rotor parts, in fact my cap and rotor are made by Conrad which actually look like MSD because they're red and black.
BTW are you saying that the vacuum advance alone is $75? Are you sure? You could get a new distributor for that much.
I have noticed quite an improvement with the TFI and MSD combination.

Yeah!!! The vacuum advance ALONE is $75.00. It's available from dealer only - as far as I can tell. I can get a complete rebuilt distributor for less than that, so I was considering an upgrade to an aftermarket distributor (MSD or similar). I wanted to know if it's worth the extra $$$ or if I should just go with a stock rebuilt unit. When I did the TFI, I upgraded the plug wires, coil, and regapped the plugs to .045.

I don't think you would notice any difference between a rebuilt stock distributor with the TFI upgrade and an MSD.

MSD6A, Pro billit dist, SS Coil, 8.5mm wires. All MSD. Differance is night and day. I have the same set up in my CJ7 now for 2yrs without any problems.

i got the same as hammerx but i run the TFI coil with the heli-coil wires. and there was a difference of night and day. im now going to the MSD Off-Road box due to the constant water/mud that my jeep is exposed to. worth every penny.
Thanks for the replies! I found a used MSD in IFSA classifieds, currently negotiating, hope I get it. I used the F**d F-350 460 plug wires when I did the TFI, but I think I'll upgrade the the heli-coil wires when I put the box in.

MSD 8.5 wires IMHO are the best street wires made.I agree with opening up the plug gap to 0.045.if you read Jacob's ignition guide it covers this really well. And like other's have said you can get a rebuilt dist for around $70.00 w/your old dist core.
