1976 Jeep J-10 No box (welded on flatbed) good body, no rust (trust me I checked) 360 4 speed 4x4. I want to make a off-road beast but have a very limited budget. I do have a parts truck at my disposal plus numberous big 3 brand 4x4's. The truck is mainly going to be for mudding and light off-roading. I am not building a rock-crawler or pulling truck. Let me know what you guys think and approximate costs on the mods.
mud - you need big tires and a big engine
boggers are the staple of the mudding tire community, but require good HP to spin (to clean the lugs) they say the new IROCs don't require as much HP to go mudding as they wont dig as bad.
mud - you need some GOOD tow points - cuz there is always a hole that is too deep or gooey
I'd SOA it, swap axles (to locked one tons), beef up the engine and then run 36 or bigger tires.

Check your Big three donor trucks for bigger axles. If you can get bigger axles cheap or free that don't need rebuilt, then I say SOA up front with RB shackle flip in the rear, White spoke 17" wheels with the cheapest 38" mud tire you can find. Leaving the biggest costs in:
RB flipper $200 approx
High steer setup or x-over steering(ask around, I don't know $$ and might not be nessessary with the axle you find)
longer shocks and brake lines (check BJs offroad)
Driveshaft work $250 (rough guess)

Axles (whatever you can steel or however much you'd have to pay)
