View Full Version : What causes blue/white smoke?

I should know this, but my truck is smoking very badly. Since the rollover, I have gotten the truck running, but did not drive it until today. I drove it around the block, and it had a lot of bluish white smoke coming out. It smoked very little before the rollover, so what could be causing it now?

TIA
Matt

From memory here.
White Smoke = Water/coolant
Blue Smoke = Oil?

you may want to pull the plugs and check them, they may give you a better idea of what is going on.

I'd say when your rig was roof-side down oil from your crankcase drained up into the valve covers and seeped past your valve guides and possibly into the exhaust system. It MAY clear up after you drive it for awhile. (this comes from have MORE than my share of rollover experience)

If you parked it on its roof, then you probably have oil in a lot of places it shouldnt be. Check your rad first to make sure you have coolant and look for oil, then check your dipstick for water,(oil turns a milkish color when mixed with coolant). If all checks out good then drive it around the block a few more times to burn off the oil that probably leaked into your cylinders and coated the tops of the pistons

Yeah I checked the dipstick for coolant, and it appeared to be fine. I will pull the plugs tomorrow, and that should tell alot.

How much might I be looking at to rebuild a 360?
And approx. how much might labor be if I have to pay to have it done?

I replaced everything in mine except the crank, rods and valves and it cost me about $450 for the kit from autozone, it was a sealed power kit. I think I spend another couple hundred on machine work. All in all, when I was done I think I had around $800 or so in it...that included buying a new water pump, fuel pump and all the tune up stuff...hoses etc. But I did it all myself.

Blue/white smoke could also be brake fluid. Don't ask how I know.

Or gear oil sucked through a vacuum line. If the motor was generally OK before the rollover, sitting upside down wouldn't permanently hurt anything. Just might take some driving to clear stuff out.

If the air filter housing is stock, I bet there's a big puddle in it.
