View Full Version : Help... I broke my Jeep!

The transmission seems to work fine. I drove it home from AZ to NM and it shifted and pulled perfectly. It was making some wierd noises and once actually slowed the Jeep going down the highway. I prayed it would make it home and it did - right to my driveway where it stopped. :D I can still shift into reverse and drive. It will move (with clunking) if given enough gas. The transmission is not slipping, and sounds/feels fine when it goes into the gears. When in neutral, I cannot budge the Jeep - as if the e-brake was on tight. I suspect the t-case. Is this expensive/difficult to repair/rebuild? Does this diagnosis sound about right? Any help or ideas are appreciated. Thanks!

He he. I figured that much!
I went home for lunch and decided to try to find neutral on the t-case. It doesn't exist anymore. I click the lever up one position or down position, and no change; It still pushes when I put it in drive.
I believe this Jeep comes with a NP-229. Is this correct? Is this a decent t-case? Is it rebuildable? Should I consider swapping in a different t-case? Do I even have options here? Thanks a bunch!

...NP- 229 sould be correct. Here is a link to some transfer case posts that may be of some help.

Update:
I lifted the wheels and checked the t-case operation. It goes into and out of 4 just fine. When in 2, the rears will spin with a little extra throttle. When they spin though, there is a scraping sound. In 4, nothing spins unless I give it considerable throttle. When it spins in 4, it feels as though it is jumping gears somewhere. Is it possible for the axles to be out of sync - one running hi and one lo? I wonder if I burned up my viscous couple.

Did you check for vac leaks to the transfer case? Might be a good way to start. Remember, there are vac lines on top of the t-case. You get to them by removing the tranny tunnel inside the cab. Mine were cracked right there.

Correct me if I am wrong, but the vacuum only switches between 2 and 4. It seems to do this perfectly. However, when it gets into 4, it seems to lock up. Maybe you mean it isn't getting completely into 4? Any idea why it would be difficult to turn the rear wheels in 2?

Is $750 + shipping + 12 month warranty a reasonable price for a rebuilt unit?
