I'm planning on doing the oh, so original 60's and a spring over  ...eventually. However, I've got a TH400/D20 setup now with Passenger side diffs. From what I've been able to find around here drivers drop is way more common. So, if I were to kick the D20 to the curb what should I put in? Seems like I've heard good things about NP205's and D300's.... I'd be willing to sacrifice a little ability for some reliability and yes, I know I'll prolly need some kind of big $$ adapter... This is in a 74 Cherokee. Thanks.

You can get an NP205 driver drop from a F**d or a passenger drop NP205 from a chebby or dodge. IIRC most if not all D-300's are passenger drop... could be wrong though. Not sure about the adapter for the TH400 though.

I have a 74 chero as well....did the SOA no 60's yet but, right now i am in the process of swaping out my qt and putting in a dana 300. after all the research i think that the 300 is the best choice because you can build it up as money permits to the quality of an atlas. ie. Twin sticks, 4.1 gearset, 32 spline outputs. I went to Novak for the adapter, really nice guys over there. Talk to a guy named Eric...extremely helpful. if you have any questions let me know i can tell you my experiences as i go.

When you go on the hunt for front dana 60's, you'll discover most are chevy/dodge and are passenger side drop. The ford ones are more rare, and hence tend to cost more. For your 74, the chevy front is right... get a dana 300 and be on the road again.

The Chevy Dana 60's appear to be more readily available like the ones from the military Chevy p/u's. As for t-case...find a Chevy TH-400 and 205 case...swap the parts and run the 205. Mechanicaly stronger than a D-300, can be twin sticked and there are now lower gears available for them. You have to remember that the Dana 300 was put into vehilces weighing less than 4,000 lbs. My rig tips the scales at 6,000 lbs.

Now if you chop the top, gut the rig and strip it down then look at the D-300 case.

As for a Ford Dana 60, plan on spending a lot for the axle then alot more to rebuild it. I have posted this many times...If I were doing it over I would have gone a set of Unimog axles and saved money over the Dana 60/ 14 bolt combo I am running. Unimog axles have cable operated selectable lockers, loads of ground clearance, and strong.

Sounds like Nidan and I are building very similar rigs. I have the suspension done and am cutting the roof off the sucka soon. I am swapping in a 727 from a J-10 and a CJ D300. I'm still Q-T and it did fine.
I almost hate to take it out but the TH-400 is puking from the dipstick tube, and she is gonna have to come out so I will put the 727/300 back in it.
I plan on making this thing as light as I can and keep the D44s. No tire larger than the 37" SSRs that are on it now. I think (hope) the 300 will hold up.

Maybe

I have seriously considered 404's but trying to find them anywhere around here is dang near impossible (though maybe I'm just not looking hard enough). I don't really want to deal with the cost/hassle of having them shipped from somewhere...but again this is going to take a while so maybe a set of 404's will pop-up by the time I scrape together the cash.

I took a look around for D300 cases and did notice that they seem to have all come in CJ's... I've got a full Exo-cage and don't want to chop anything off the body. Sounds like a 205 would be the way to go then.

now heres what i dont get. ive heard that twice today." d-300's were put into little vehicles and not for big rigs." so what gives on the D20? it was put into both cj's 3500lb vehicles and cherokees 5500 and up. and we all know the 300 is stronger than the 20 so a beefed up 300 should def handle a cherokee i think. plus a 205 cant be adapted to a t-18 like i got, so if u got it you are SOL gotta go withh a SM465 or comparable. not sure with a th400. the 205 is super strong but the low range absolutely sucks and that 3.0:1 low range kit is 1000 bucks! you can get a 4.0:1 in a 300 for 600-700. plus with the 32 spline output, etc i think it could be an excellent choice reguardless of what our rigs weigh
