401 Camshaft question

I just pulled the cam out and it is in pretty bad shape, what is the best replacement cam with a stock grind?

you can buy the same cam that the 401 came with. just 360 replacement cams, which are different then stock 401 cams.

but personally i would go with an rv cam, many here have some, I am sure they will comment. But your going through all that work, you might as well get a few extra ponies for the exact same cost.

I bought a cam from Engle Cams it is a grind that Kris came up with and he has had excellent results. They were putting one into a 401 but haven't heard about the results yet. I am sure Kris will chime in and provide the needed information. I am looking forward to firing up mine in the very near future.

I was wondering about the numbers on lift, duration, etc. I'll get it from redline cams, he has one on the shelf that has a performance grind. and the price is right.

Depends on your carb, dizzy springs, transmission, axle ratio, tire size, and at what RPM you most drive at. Do you want low end power, high or mid range? Do you want economy? Call up a couple cam makers and tell them what you want. My 76 TSM lists the cam specs for the 360 and 401, and the lift, exhaust timing and duration, intake timing and duration, and overlap were much different.

factory carb,trans is the stock th400, Q-trac W/ low range. the gears are 354's and tire size is 31,dad bought it new in 78 and didn't change much of anything just had it fixed when something went wrong. now it's mine and it time to get it running good again and do some upgrades.(took my drivers test in it 19yrs ago)
