OK. When I put in my new engine I noticed that the flexplate was cracked. I had a flexplate from my 88 donor. They were visibly different but we just chalked it up to being different years. We installed it and noticed a chirping sound. It was the flexplate to torque converter bolts hitting on the inspection plate. you could see the bolt heads, they became shiny.

We bought a new flexplate for the 86. this is the correct flexplate for the year. Spent all day pulling the tranny back and reinstalling everything. It chirps too.

Anybody else ever have this problem? I tried bending the plate so it won't rub but that didn't work. HELP

Yup I have this same problem. Don't know how to fix it.
I did discover part of the problem. The PO of mine had the tranny replaced and they didn't put the inspection plate on right. Put it over the top of the engine plate instead of under it. I put it back the right way but you can still hear the bolts rubbing against it. I was wondering if maybe there were special bolts for the torque converter with thinner heads that the mechanic didn't use. All my bolts are torqued to spec.

Is there a bellhousing spacer on the automatic(in-between block to trans?) if left out, this would bring trans closer to block?, and if flexplate had the small crankshaft spacer installed first that would make it stick out towards the convertor. Just a few thoughts.

I ground the bolts down, one at a time, only to the point where the noise stopped. I used aftermarket bolts, which had a taller head. I didn't have a chirp - I had BAMBAMBAMBAM when I started it up.

After grinding and installing, I painted the head with POR-15 to keep them from rusting.

I was thinking that maybe the flexplate got installed backward. I know it will only go on one way for the bolts to line up but will it do the same thing backwards?
