View Full Version : so i was gonna cut my roof off...

For a long time, i've been planning to cut the roof crew-cab style, behind the back doors. I was gonna make a back of the cab "wall" and a removable lexan window...
As I was standing in my garage last night, looking at the jeep, I realized just how big it would still be... I dont really like being the shortbus on swampers, so I've decided to cut more... I'm going to half cab it like an early bronco, just enough roof to cover the front seats and to cover the tuffy 2-radio overhead console. Basically enough to keep the rain/snow/sun off of me while i drive it. I'll be making a soft back with a window so i can still drive it when it gets cold out. And, i'm gonna skin out the back doors and weld them shut... that way i can refuse to be the taxi...
If my plans holdout and nothing else around my house breaks, I'll be starting the mock up this weekend. I cant wait to get this project on the table and get it over with. Pics to follow when I actually have something done, not just lines drawn with a sharpie!

Personally, I like the look of the chop behind the rear doors... but I don't have a 4 door so who am I to talk?
I would advise against using lexan for any type of window. Lexan will discolor with exposure to the sun.
I have to ask this because it is really bothering me... why did you buy a 4-door if you DIDN't want to be the taxi? Right price?

brad w did you ever get your motor in and iirc f.i. done?
Brad W.

never got the motor swap done, but i have all the EFI stuff. I'm still debating which crate motor i want, chevy of course. I have the one ton th400 all ready to go in, and the NP-205 just needs a little cleanup and the cable twin-stick setup done.
and on the ? of 4 doors... free is always the right price!

I am planning on chopping the top on my chero next summer most likely. I will be chopping behind the cab (2dr chero), but I have decided on either ditching the rear seat and making it a truck like cab, or making the soft top go farther back behind the rear seat.

I am in the "debate" stage of chopping mine. The floor boards in it were done pretty well by the PO, but the bondo flares and lower 3" of the body are crappy. I want to sawzall the frame behind the rear shackles, put a new crossmember on there, and cut the roof behind the doors. I am curious as to what you guys wind up with for a rear cover. I like how Donzi did his, but that looks a little involved for me.

My rear cover is going to be 2 pieces: a welded in steel lower divider (like early bronco half cabs) and a soft upper made from military canvas or black nogahide, with a clear vinyl window in it, just like the tops for baby jeeps... this way it can wrap around the cage bars and other misc crap that might get in the way. I also wanted my divider to be partially removable so I can go "almost" topless. I'll make a set of half doors for the summer and carry a raincoat...
I took anoter look last night and did some photochopping of random pics. So here is my refined plan: crew cab chop first. if it looks crappy, keep cutting!

When I cut the roof on the Wagoneer behind the front seats, I took the rear part of the body and moved it forward. This way I got the body lines a little different than just cutting behind the front doors. Also shortened the rear overhang a bit.

That would be awesome if you could bring the wag! Are you going to get a cabin at the KOA? I would love to see the look on Dave's face when you tell him your mailing address in Norway! Priceless. Look forward to seeing you there Frank.

I had the top custom made at a local upholstery shop. It's made from the same grade of canvas as the real Jeep soft tops are, not the cheap boat stuff. There is no frame work, that is what's nice about the design. It uses the roll cage to support it.

very cool, thanks. thats the one i remember most. i had the rollover vid on my desktop forever. i always did like the cage on that thing, at the moment ill probably just do a 1/4 cab for now. i like the idea of doors and a windshield. we tend to play in the mud a lot around here. i may take the rest of the roof off after a while. winter around can also be pretty cold at times. although you wouldnt know that from the 60-65 degrees we have been getting lately.:D

nope. I'm not going to cut until I'm absolutely sure what I want to do. I'm 80% set on a crew-cab cut, and using a slider window in the back, like a pickup cab. we shall see.
