View Full Version : Engine Rebuild Questions
This may be a repeat of a past topic, but I'll ask anyway. I'm looking to rebuild by 360 sometime in the not so near future. What mods can be made during the rebuild to increase durability/performance without sacrificing too much economy. My wag has the Edelbrock intak/carb and the TFI conversion already. Thanks

Here's what I am doing: rebuild 360 with standard rebuild:
hone cylinders (no boring needed)
clean and surface heads (.007" out)
3 angle valve grind
cam bearings, rings, gaskets, lifters, and parts from PAW in CA.
Have the engine cleaned, inspected for microscopic cracks, new freeze plugs installed, new bearings all around.
Reuse as many parts as you can, but make sure that you have them all inspected first.
Misc. related items, new:
Modine 3 core radiator
water pump
alternator
motor mounts
plugs
wires
ujoints
hoses
belts
thermostat
airpump
Upgrades underway:
Oil Galley bypass kit (shoots oil to the rear bearings, where our v8's tend to get dry and have bearing fail), cost of kit: $20.00.
Edelbrock 3731 egr 4bbl intake.
Edelbrock 1406 egr carb.
Upgraded cam, P.A.W. This is the same cam as the summit 8600, which Lindel and others rave about, but the cost is much less for the same specs.
Upgraded double-roller timing chain, P.A.W.
Offroad needles for carb, which helps with steep inclines.
Within a few months, I will also be adding a DUI distributor/coil combo, for $350. This replaces the existing distributor & coil. From what I have been told, this is FAR better than the TFI upgrade, and the MSD-6A upgrade combined!
Transmission is being rebuilt at the same time. I have the chrysler TF727 tranny, and I am getting a standard rebuild, and adding a Transgo stage 2 shift kit, and an RV torque converter.
Exhaust system was already fabbed with 2.5" pipe and a flowmaster out the rear.
I figure, if I am gonna do it, I might as well do it right, and spend the money once. This will also ensure everything is in top condition.
If anyone needs part numbers, lemme know and I can provide part #'s and contact info.

Ryan, Where can I find more info on the oil galley bypass kit? I wasn't aware that such a kit existed.

Hey BillyRB,
Just a quick comment about "Your" upgrades. You stated that you woudl be doing the DUI upgrade for 350.00 Did that include new wires. Only reason i ask is because I too am going to be Doing the same upgrade( I have a problem w/ moisture and ignition box on fender) Now I have been looking at numerous sites for the Hei(guess its the same thing as DUI) and found a placxe called 4wheeldrive hardware and they have them for 350.00. Well that is what i was gonna use until i found this place aboiut an hour from here. Name is
Hoaks 4wd center,815 Hellam St,Wrightsville,Pa. 17368 Phone # 1-800-827-1341.
Just spoke to the secretary today(surprised she knew what i was talking about) she owns 3 J series and her husband has wranglers, cherokees, and scramblers everything from daily driver to show. She quoted me a price of 250.00 for a complete HEI setup w/ dist. and cap, coil and everything in between.....minus wires. I thought that was a darn good deal. She also is sending me a a book of all their suppliers. She said they are not jeep specific but they have more jeeps parts than anything else. And being that she knew about FSJ I thought that was a bonus right there. I think her name was Michelle( I could be wrong though) i am terrible w/ names. i did tell her about IFSJA.org and she was unaware of it. she also gave me other sites too that they use. So I guess this woudl be FYI Just passing along info.

The quote I had DIDN'T include wires. I was referred to DUI's website by others here who have installed the DUI brand. I am open to options, especially if it works just as good AND saves me $100!. I'll call her today and get some info, as the purchase of the DUI or equivalent is still about a month out....thanks for the info!

I called and talked to one of the sales guys....no website, no company literature showing what they sell, no information about the HEI.....except the price, $259. I like the idea of saving money, but, not at the risk of not knowing what I am buying. If they give me more info, such as the specs, comparisons to other dizzy's, etc, I would be more interested in buying.....either way, I will post about what I do.

Hey BillyRB,
I am sorry to hear about that. Actually i am kinda pissed as to how she was so extremely helpful to me and is mailing me stuff and he was so useless for you!She told me it was 250.00. Well either way, I have the website of the manufacturer it is:
http://www.driveajeep.com/main/page1.html
Maybe that will help w/ specs. I emailed the obove manufacturer and he emailed me back and said who to buy through(he said he only sells to this Hoaks place) Well, if the website don't help you any, Maybe when I get my literature i can pass some info along. Sorry for the run around.....If I woudl have know this ahead of time, I woudln't have said anything Craig

for reliability have the assy (pistons, rods, crank, flywheel, and harmonic balancer) balanced by a competent machine shop and then have the engine bored/honed to the pistons individual size. DENNIS

Dennis, I'm having just exactly that done! It's a great idea, too.
Craig, that lady unfortunately wasn't there when I called....talked to some guy who was, as he stated "on his lunch break and didn't have time to explain everything". Shame. But, I will still research it, and hopefully talk to that young lady in the future. Thanks for the post!
