Rear dana44 always giving me troubles. Maybe it's the final straw and sign to step up. When I busted my passenger rear shaft the first time, it ruined the groove where the axle bearing and seal sit in. I have since replaced everything, and RTVed the hell out of that area. Worked for a good while, until I took it into a shop to get the electrac replaced..again. I had to re-seal with RTV once again and this time it did not work. The leak has worsened to the point of if I drive 200 miles, there is no more lube. After the last tellico trip both sides are seeping lube, after I re-sealed both sides for the 3rd time. Any suggestions?

new housing
convert to full-float kit on D44 (might seal in slightly different areas for you)
or,
big axle time

You might try some cork gasket sheets, and custom make a gasket and use RTV to seal it. Some pics might help. The other thing that comes to mind is torque specs on the bolts and pattern. If indeed you are overloading the axles i would certainly go bigger.

Check and see if you can install inner seals. Some of the housings were machined to accept inner seals but not used. These seals will go in the axle tube itself. You would then have to pack the wheelbearings with Grease as you do the front.

Hit the junk yards and find a Dana 70, 14 Bolt etc. Time to step up or just keep pouring money into that black hole.

Dont use RTV. RTV dries hard and will let leaks seep through. High Tack or the like will work a whole lot better, and it doesnt ever dry, its stays 'wet' so new holes wont show up.

But with as many troubles as you have had with your rear axle breaking, I would say a bigger axle is in order.

That is what I intially had first time around, but then switched to the other seals because they would not sit back in that groove anymore from the damage

Funds aren't flowing enough right now to get a 60, so a few bucks to try new sealing methods will work right now. Keeping my eyes out for a 60 rear and 8-lug conversion stuff for the front, reasonably priced, though. Maybe a semi-float 6-lug 60 would be easier right now, as far as time and $$ (will not need conversion stuff for front axle and 8lug rims).

Other problem is I prolly can't find anyone stupid enough to purchase an axle with an electrac in it.

I agree, you guys wouldnt believe how much used stuff that I have sold on ebay for more than I bought it for new...

14bolts are like $100 bucks.

Yep, they are cheap... I have seen several for $50 here....

And of course, there is that one that I saw on the shoulder of the highway 3 days ago.... By the time I got back to it with a truck, it was gone though...

Just as a heads up, saw in the Ouray thread that you're moving out to Utah. If you go full widths you'll have to use some kind of flares since you have to pass emissions AND safety inspection out here and most of the cops are not quite as friendly as the good ole boys back home. I know I have a Dana 60 rear with 4.10s in the barn back home though if you want it though. Also, prepare for rust. They love using salt out here and it gets everywhere, so if you like your Jeep being clean, wash it a lot during the winter.

I'm currently FSJless at the moment, but that'll be changing soon. Hopefully by next week. It'll be good to have another southern FSJer out here in the weirdest state in the union.

Take it easy,
Will

They use salt in Utah?! Great Googley MoogleyGreat Googley MoogleyGreat Googley Moogley, I thought only the idiot eastern states used it?! We just use sand here.

Stuka, never underestimate the idiocy of the state of Utah, but then we are surrounded by the largest inland body of salt water on the continent and home to the salt flats, salt mines, etc. But yeah, it still sucks even though they mix it with sand. Atleast it's dry so they don't rot out with the blazing speed that they did back in Maine.

Paul, PMed ya.

Dan, PMed ya back. Sorry to hijack your thread buddy.
