I have the style header that has the exhaust port that led up to the air intake for heating gases into the carb. How do you close this off?

It should be closed in there. The only thing that should go up the tube to the intake would be heat, not exhaust. Unless I am missing something...

Jim is right......heat only!....

Sounds like you could use a new, well-lubricated muffler bearing. I'd trade you one for that old mangy 401, I guess.

Of course, fellas, just kidding.

JCE, the flexible tube coming up from your passenger side exhaust manifold to the bottom of your air cleaner assembly is intended to pass warm air, not exhaust. This accomplishes a number of things, such as assisting with opening the choke on the carburetor so you don't have to fiddle with it. The warm air also helps to maintain a relatively constant temperature in the air cleaner assembly, which in turn keeps the combustion process occurring within a desired temperature range. This latter quality is to ensure consistent emissions output.

There are two thermostatic vacuum motors on the panhandle of your air cleaner assembly. One of these closes when sufficient heat has been drawn, at which point the engine tries to keep cool more than it is concerned with warming up.

So, if I can't interest you in a muffler-bearing-for-your-401 swap, I could at least advise you to make sure that your flex hose is in good shape.

Thanks for the replies, however I no longer have the old air cleaner assembly or flex that connected to it. I knew what the port was for and realize that nothing should be coming out except heat, but I have black residue right above the opening. Any ideas on closing this off would help. And yes I'll trade you the 401, but I'd rather have a flux capacitor to improve my gas mileage. tongue.gif
