This isn't exactly a FSJ question, but it might apply to some of the D60 axles out there, and just wanted to see what anybody knew on this.
Am doing a rear brake job on the '88 Dodge B350(1 ton van), and, as usual, end up with more surprises than I expected. OK....first, had to pull out the axle shafts to remove the hub/drum unit. Ok....that was fun itself. Looks like who ever had them off before used black "sealant" on the mating surface of the axle unit. Have the TSM for the van and it shows what looks like a factory punched gasket goes there. So....
When checking on brake parts for this, asked about this gasket too. They told me to measure it and they could look it up. So, did that...went and got parts today. Shows it's "aluminum", so I'm thinking that weird metalized gasket stuff, but.....they had two in stock, and brought 'em out....
It actually looks like plain ol' aluminum just punched out. Like a roughly 4.5" circle with 8 bolt holes punched in(and one large hole in the middle for the axle shaft area. It looks like it will "fit", but just the concept of metal-metal contact with only an "aluminum" gasket between somehow didn't seem all that great to me. What I'm wondering is....
-Does this sound correct...an actual aluminum punched out piece for a GASKET?
-if so, should I put gasket sealant on one/both surfaces when mounting it so it stick better?
-"what" is the purpose for aluminum for a gasket if it is proper?
BTW...this is a NAPA gasket and it says "rear axle" right on the package. I can scan this in if anyone wants to see what it looks like.
One more question:
-Since this is off a D60 from a Mopar....and knowing the J-20s used D60s.....is this sorta thing used on the full floater J-truck axles too?
Thanks for any input....
