Ok fellas I know this is a site for the full size folks but my brother who has a full size and haunts these pages all the time tells my some of you know your poop, so I just bout this 87 Cherokee chief and I hear they put two different T cases in them, but I don’t know how to tell which one I have, so if any of you know maybe you could fill me in. Also I cant seem to find a sway bar in the back is it possible that it doesn’t have one or did it get pulled out at some point, or am I just looking in the wrong place. I spent and hour or so crawlin around under there and there are some bracket looking things just in fount of the axel that look like they may be somthin but I cant tell for sure. The guy I got it from did off road a bit but didn’t seam like the kind of fella to be pullin out sway bars. Thanks xjcaly

we know our poop about FSJ's, but maybe a little about XJ's too. you could also try www.naxja.org (http://www.naxja.org)

the NP207 was used in XJs and CJs from 84-87.
the NP231 was introduced in 88 I believe.

also, your jeep SHOULD have a rear sway bar. try http://www.industryfigure.com/berkeley/Jeep/rearswaybar.htm to see some photos of a removal. this should tell you where to look ;)

extra points for know XJ info?? hope this helps.

Crawl under the vehicle and find the T-case. Look on the back side of the case for a round metal plaque. It should have the info you are looking for stamped on it. It will tell you what case you have and what gear ratio your low range is!

Some XJ's come without a rear swaybar from the factory. My 2001 XJ with the UpCountry package came without one. And a lot of people will remove theirs because that swaybar is really quite useless.

As far as the T-Case, either crawl under and look or go to the book store and look for "The Illustrated Jeep Buyer's Guide". That book has a lot of information about driveline options.

stay far away from that 207 t-case unless you like transfer case problems. ;)

Howdy,

My 84 Cherokee came with a swaybar, but it was cake to take off. It's located an inch or so in front of the rear axle. My wife's 89 Wagoneer (XJ) doesn't have a rear swaybar at all, from the factory...

Is your front axle vacuum disconnect? If so, consider swapping it out or find a cable actuator. The front vacuum stinks big time...

See bro
What did I tell ya? :D tongue.gif

So anybody know for sure bout that T-case?
LRRH says it is a 207 but some other peeples seem to think that it might be better to check the T-case tag...was there any other option than the 207???

Anyway,
Welcome to the board XJCALY! ;)

Oh yeah...whats wrong with the 207 case (s'posing that is what he has) aside from the rear output shaft slip-yoke problem??? Is there a reliability issue? Strength?

Ok there are also some other numbers on the round tag. one is a serial number and one is 272 and the little red word that is sorta worn off looks like it may be ratio, that number sound right to be a ratio? As for the rest of the numbers I think they had red words to tell you what the number was at one point but I can't make them out now. Thanks again for the help.

Seein' as it says "231" on the case, sorta makes one think that it is the NP231 instead of the 207 huh? :D

come one guys, this is jeep....

there aren't matching numbers for a reason...anything and everything comes out of the factory!!!!

if the tags says 231, then my guess is 231.

http://www.off-road.com/jeep/tech/xfer/np231.html

might as well share my source that says the 231 was let loose upon jeeps in 1988!!
