Major problems, I need help, please.
I need to put new doors on my 89 GW so I got some new ones, however, the screws are stripped to heck. I guess the PO was attempting to do the same but succeeded only in stripping the screws. Does antone have any ideas on how I can get them out. I really need to put new doors on. Thanks for the help!

If it's that center one on the body this is going to suck, that baby is way back in there.
You could just leave the old hinges on there and swap on the door, if you take off the door panel you'll see where the hinge attaches to the door.

For those with extra cash laying around, situations like this must be seen as an opportunity. An opportunity to buy new tools that is! If you are good, you could get a new drill & set of bits out of it.

Are they screws or bolts?

They sell drill bits at the hardware stores, sears etc. that you can drill into the screw and then when you reverse, it backs the screw right out.

If a bolt, there's always a pipe wrench or channel locks. Maybe you could try one of Bob Vila's "clench wrench." I have always wondered if those really work or not.

Hey John, she's talking about those big Great Googley MoogleyGreat Googley MoogleyGreat Googley MoogleyGreat Googley MoogleyGreat Googley Moogley torx bolts that hold the door to the body. No villa tool is gonna take them babys off, can't get a pipe wrench no place near them and a drill bit is gonna break off, them things are stout.

by stripped do you where the hole in the screw head where the torx socket fits or the threads of the screw? if its the head,i would get an impact screwdriver. put the right torx socket on it and wail the tar out of it with a hammer. thats how impact drivers work. if you get the screw to move the tiniest bit, youll get it out eventually. i would stay away from ez-outs, they are hard and brittle. they shear easily and are a major PITA to remove if they shear because they are as hard as a drillbit.another shade tree trick is to use a chisel to get them started. another trick is to saw a slot across the head and use a BIG screwdriver. prolly wont work here 'cause there is no room. liberal use of a penetrating oil will help too. once they are out, toss'em and get regular grade five hex heads.loctite will keep them from loosening. i just took a peek at my wags hinges. a new pair of genuine 7" vise grips will prolly get them moving. as for the inset ones, try this. back out the other 2. use the door as a lever and gently lift it. by this you should get the hinges to move under the screw head. then go after with an impact driver/ torx setup. have patience, you will prevail. goodluck

Yes, I'm talking about the torx screws in the body. Well, ok the philips head screws in the door are stripped too, I guess they tried both and failed. I didn't want to make it worse so I didn't bother trying. I though about taking out the pin between the hinges, but I'm not sure if they come out. I was hoping to put the new doors on myself so I don't have to spend the extra cash to have the machanic do it while he's swapping engines. It's gonna cost me about 600 to 800 just for the engine swap, so I want to save as much as I can by doing most of the body work myself. I did manage to swap the roof racks by myself....lol Thanks for the advice!

...Well, ok the philips head screws in the door are stripped too, I guess they tried both and failed....Doesn't mean you have to fail, you can cut new grooves with a die grinder or rotozip, start soaking them with PB Blaster for a couple of days, get in around the back side too, they will come out. Make sure the impact hammer is going the right way. You can do this.

After trying many different penetrating oils, heat and breaking many Torx sockets, I finally ended up welding a nut to the head of the bolts and most of them came out. The three that didn't broke the head clean off and I had to drill through them in steps, and finally ran a tap through them. I was however super lucky that the only ones that did come out on their own were the deep ones.

I cleanly snapped off the top 1/4" of the tip of a T-45 bit in that very bolt on my parts-truck, so I got an impact bit that size, hooked it to my impact-gun, and cleanly snapped off the top 1/4" of the tip on that bit in a fraction of the time...

If you find a solution to this problem, let me know, as I need to change out the worn hinge on my '88.

Hey guys,
Thanks for all the advice. I was just about to go to sleep last night when an idea hit me. I figured that the original door is pretty much shot, so I won't be needing it, so I said to myself, why not cut into the door panel to get to the stripped Philips? The hinge is in good shape, at least the top one is, the bottom one is so rusted it looks like it'll fall apart if I just tap it. Anyway, I figure if I can get to the back of the philips, I can use a vise grip to help get the heads out just enough where I can get then out all the way, or cut the **** heads off and try to get then to go all the way through to the back. Am I making any sense? Well, I'm not sure if it'll work, but it's worth a try since I'll be the one doing most of the work I'll just have to be inventive... Thanks!
