What is the best way to set up a dash mounted electric tach?
I want to set it up so the internal baklight is in synch with the dash lights.
Anyone ever try or have pics of a hood tach. I'd like to put an old GTO tach on the hood, but they are $$$!!!
Thanks

I've got mine mounted on the dash right above the A/C controls...you can wire the light to the dimmer lights. The hood tach you're referring to is small, hard to read (especially in the rain) and doesn't last for long because of the vibration. The internal light of the tach's are generally kinda dim...

I mounted mine on the steering column and I believe there was a thread on this a while back so you could look it up.

I'm not going to argue about durability of a hood mounted unit, but JCWhitney used to sell one kindof like the ol goat's (so it would look like it was a part of the original sheetmetal)
Personally, I'm not a fan of column mounted tach's cause I want them closer to my normal view. OTH, I'm not sure how often or for what you'll be using the tach for on a 91...placement has a lot to do with what you are going to do with it. Drag racers often use the column and Huge tach's. Occassionally they mount them outside, more with the older mechanically friven tach's. On my car, I clipped mine to the dashpad. Frankly, I only use it for tuning and drag racing, in autocross I put it in 2nd a leave it. I would guess that if I had a 4 spd manual tranny, I still wouldn't look at it in an autocross...but maybe I would occasionally.
Lights. Most aftermarket instruments come with a light. It is easy to run a wire to the fuse box and splice it into a circuit/fuse that is tied to the instrument lights/dimmer. I thought the autogage light for my current tach was too bright! You can sometimes get bulbs of differnt colors, or color tops to go over them, along with differnt wattages for the same base. That takes so hunting though. I think VDO gages has the colored bulb covers.
There was a thread not long ago on instrument panel colors. SpruceMoose I think has gone completely over to aircraft red. My reflection problem went away on the GW when I went with the Cibie H4 headlamps.

I put mine on the steering column and wired it into the dash light circut. It works just fine and the light is synched. I started paying attention to the RPM I was pulling years ago. It seems I never get over 4500 and run mostly 3000 or under off road. So when I built my Traveler I tuned the cam, carb, exhaust, ect to perform best between 1000 and 4000 RPM.

You autocross your GW? Coool!
Do you need training wheels in place of the doorhandles, though?
