Hi, all. Still working on the rebuild and finally seeing some progress. While I have the Honcho apart I have been looking for the axel ratio tags. Like others, mine is long gone the only evidence is the small flap under a bolt on the axle. Question: Can one determine the axle ratios from the numbers cast in the differential housing? Here's what I found:
Front (D44): 620544
KD1, 11 79; I assume the 11 79 is date of mfg.
Rear (AMC 20) N 428 22 1 0 3235428
Thanks to all you FSJ trivia experts for a response.

Lift up one tire and spin it two full rotations by hand and count how many times the drive shaft turns. How ever many revolutions of the driveshaft is the ratio to :1 .(this is an approx method.
Edit>>>>If you want to get extremely accurate without opening it up and counting teeth, you can mark the starting point on the driveshaft and have a stationary reference point, and count every full rotation(total =Y), then measure the degrees past the reference point(=X). Multiply the degrees past by 100 and then divide by 360, add this to the number of full rotations and you'll have your gear ratio.
(100)X
---------- + Y = gear ratio
360

If the axles are still stock, then your best bet is to find the Code on the rear AMC20 axle. Here are two links to help out...first one shows WHERE to look for the code(you might have to clean it off), and second link shows the better code breakdown:
http://www.ifsja.org/tech/axle/axleid.shtml
http://www.jeeptech.com/axle/amc20.html
That should help some(I hope!).....
