All 86's have a D44 front axle. Rears could be either D44 or AMC20 axles depending when in 86 your FSJ was built. Early have the AMC20, later have the D44. If the rear diff cover matches the front it's a D44. If it is totally round like 1/2 a basketball it's an AMC20 axle.

BTW the 3 31 43 13 is the ratio numbers for a 3.31 axle ratio(43 teeth on the ring gear and 13 on the pinion gear).

The numbers you have provided, state your gearing is 3.31 with 43 tooth ring gear and a 13 tooth pinion shaft.

sounds like a set of 44's then.
I was starting to price lock up options and with a 3:31 will probably need lower gears for off road use 4:11 or 4:27

thanks for the help

I use 4.10's with 33's and it is great unless you are going down the highway, then it sounds like the motor is trying to escape. With the 2.62 low range that you have I would run 3.73's so as not to turn the motor so hard on road but you would still have plenty of gear off road. The added benefit of using 3.73's is that you do not have to replace the diff carriers in the 44's.
