Has anyone tried using these in place of the 3-piece nut/washer/nut combo on the front wheels?

Also, my mechanic tells me that my LF wheel is missing the outer nut and lock washer. Assuming that the bearings are still tight (and the wheel doesn't fall off first), how likely is a damaged hub/spindle?
I have to tear into the front axle in the near future and I want to anticipate any problems that might arise (yeah, right).
