I just purchased a built mud truck with 38.5 inch Ground Hawgs that are approximately 8 years old and have been sitting for the past 3 years. There is no obvious sign of rot, sidewall checking, etc... but are these tires still functional? (for mud bogs and general off roading)

It would appear that they are outdated by modern tire standards, but I don't have to be embarrassed to show up with a set of Ground Hawgs on my truck, do I?

I ran a set of 35's on a chev p/u for years and loved them, except for the flat spotting in the mornings (nylon bias ply's) As long as they are 50% or better tread you won't feel out of place.

if they hold air mostly overnight, run them until you kill them, no worries

but bias ply tires will give you fits for the first several miles... i recently scored a set of 7.50 - 16 firestone 'super-traction ND' tires ( a LOT like the old town and country tread ) for 40 bucks, with the rubber nipples still on them... i love them, but they are pretty obnoxious at oh-dark-thirty on my way to work... but, i never know when i will have to slog down to the bottoms and get one of my jeep carcasses out of the pile... so tires like this are a real blessing to me...

anyway, too long, run them until they are junked out..

peace
Dave

Thanks, guys. This truck would take considerable work to make street legal so daily driving won't be an issue.

How big a deal is flat spotting for mud racing?

i dont think that 8 day old ground hawgs are worth running. of the few people that i know that have run those, they hated them.

this was for rocks and sand.

the directional tread works pretty good in the mud,but your motor has to have the balls to spin em fast in higher gears. ive got them on my scout and the 345 does a nice job of keeping them cleaned out. it goes all the places and then some as others ive trailed with. ive rode with guys with buckshots, TSLs,and boggers.

the continious center tread helps keep you from sliding off into oblivion in the off camber spots.

my only complaint with them is id like the void area to be alittle bigger, and the shape alittle different. my SXs on my jeep will sometimes catch a lug on a root or rock and add some extra traction. the hawgs, mmm, that dont really seem to happen.

surprises me someone didnt like em in sand. id think the directional tread would work as well there as it does in mud.maybe the guys DB knows needed more motor,or needed to take the block of wood out from underneath the skinny pedal :D

on the rocks you might wanna try em backwards, like alot of people run the claws? i dont know there is definately more mud than there is rock here in ohio and indianna.

bottom line is theyre on your truck, run em and see how they work for you. if your truck goes where you want it to go,then dont worry about peoples opinions who have to have a bigger tire to compensate for a lack in other areas. ;)

they are not the greatest tire in the world, but anyone who thinks they are junk and not worth running is welcome to come follow me on indiannas muddy rutted trails and see how your tires compare
