I bought a 75 chief with a TH-400. The guy said it had all the gears until his son changed the fluid and filter in it. Now there is no reverse. Also, it takes off in second gear now. It has first if I pull the shifter into first but no first when in drive. Need some help here if anyone knows "was up"..........as always thx in advance.

hehe common TH400 problem - Vaccuum Shift Modulator!! Sticks out the passenger side front of the trans. I beleive they're about 10 bucks at AutoZone or similar type auto stores. Cheap and easy to replace. Give it a try before pulling your hair out!

on the right rear of the trans there is a square cover with 4 bolts holding it on take the cover off and grab the govoner and pull it out and look at the gear on the end of it also hold it with the gear up and squeeze the fly-wheights and watch the center shaft inside the govner thru the slots in the body and see if the center rod moves up and down as you squeeze the fly wheights

This is all good info guys. What I can't figure out is if all the guy did was change the fluid and filter and everything was working fine before, how does this effect the modulator and governor?

its magic .............you wont belive what can happen just by changing the filter and pan gasket.............

he may not have been careful and bumped the vacuum line to the modulator.....but like mikie said...it's magic!!

Thanks for the offer mikie....I'm really tempted after finding out what a rebuild costs. I dropped the pan myself yesterday and as soon as what looked like old 30 wt drained out I found most of the clutch pak and some of the shiny metal sand in the bottom. Now I'm afraid to even drive it to the store. PS "Magic Bad" :(
