What does the ultimate FSJ bumper look like? What special features does it have?

well if we're talkin the ultimate bumper then it would have to be incorporated into a set of roll panel guards and the rear bumper. Probably best to use bolts as opposed to welding for best strength and of course for access during maintenance. maybe something that wraps around the wheel wells so you got total lower protection all the way around while out on the trail
Here's my criteria:
1. Light weight, but strong enough to smash on lava rock
2. Front bumper protects radiator and headlights in a rollover, aids in approach (slides over rocks, doesn't decrease approach angle)
3. Rear bumper allows the vehicle to slide over rocks, needs metal between the rear tire and rear of the vehicle for smooth sliding action.
4. Nerf bar/skids that don't decrease ground clearance, but are strong enough to hold the weight of the vehicle often, and slide.
5. All of this metal needs to have good, clean lines that work well with the Jeep's orginal lines so everything still looks good even with sever rock rash. Spray paint touch-up-able.
Can you say "picky"? :D
If you want a nice clean look, with an easy to find bumper, try a Chevy p/u front bumper. I put one off a 1993 on my 1979 J10. I had to narrow the very ends of the frame horns 1/2 inch total. It bolted right on. Also the fender supports on the bottom of the fenders line up with the outside holes on the bumper. Nice bonus! It looks like it belongs on the truck, not rigged on. Kujo

I'd say a winch, so you can pull the rest of us out of mud puddles and such. Definitely a winch.

i like the idea of tying everything together kina like an exo cage. added bonus it would basically give you extra flare to help stay legal.
I have a 4" pipe bumper on the back of my 85 J20, It opens up on each side and I keep my tire chains inside. It adds weight to the back for driving on snow, and I wouldn't want to run into it; if I was tailgating me. smile.gif

Also- 2" reciever hitches incorporated into the bumper. Not just an after-thought welded on below it.

If I could figure out how to send pix on this to my reply, I would.
I can email someone a pix of the bumpers I made for my J10 if they want to see.
Front bumper is in the same shape and angles as the factory aluminum bumper, except it is made out of 8" "C" channel and has a receiver built into it. The rear bumper is made from 4" square tubing and approximates the factory square bumper, except it is much higher accomidating the 3" body lift. It also has the receiver built in. The rear also serves as an air tank.

Tuck check out my rocker skids. I have planted my 6000 pound jeep on mine numerous times and no problems. I will take my jack and lift one side up by the rock rails for any trail repairs. Oh, and they don't take one tenth of an inch of ground clearance away!!!

Someone on another board here saw pics of my CJ bumper and said I should post it here to give some ideas.
From what I was told, its an early custom Tomken bumper.

Yeah, those are both CJ bumpers, but they have some cool features to give you ideas if you can make your own (or have someone make you a bumper)
