Don't know if this is a common problem or not. I flip the waggy in to 4wd. (select-trac) And it sounds like it is grinding. Some times it will hold in 4wd some times it wont. I noticed tonight it wasn't going in at all. It is cold night. Could this just be a vaccum problem or the x-fer needs to be rebuilt and how hard is it. I've done all kinds of gear boxs on machines and stuff like that. As long as I take it apart. I can put it back together.
the fact that sometimes it stays in 4wd and other times it doesn't sounds like the chain is going bad.

Make sure your vacuum motors are working. The front axle must shift before vacuum is allowed to the t-case. Check you vacuum line from the canister(red plastic line) for 12-15in. of vacuum. Once the motors have been moved, they should stay in place until vacuum is applied to the other side of the diaphram. The noise may be coming from the front axle which means the slip collar is not engaging fully. This could be caused by low vacuum, a bad vacuum motor or a axle and stub shaft inside your diff. If all seems ok then you may have to go into the case, and while you are in there, you could pin your viscous coupler. I wrote a tech article on fixing that last month.

I don't think 85's have vacuum disconnect on the front axle(neither of mine do anyway); you should only have one vacuum motor, the one on the transfer case.

I was told '85 or '86(don't remember which, maybe even '84) was a cross over year. Both were available.

Drained the oil out of the x-fer. It had flakes in it. I think the chain is gone. How much does it cost for a rebuild kit. Does any one have the links for these kits. I haven't checked any of the local shops.
thanks
