View Full Version : Electric Rear Window Replacement??

Well, the old Cherokee survived her first roadtrip (1920 miles!). EXCEPT for the rear window, which shattered on the 4th morning of our 14-night camping trip. Been breathing in exhaust fumes for most of those miles!

We tried to have the rear window replaced while we were down in the desert. The glass shop tried out 2 different pieced of glass, but both were too big. My window is encased in a stainless steel(?) frame. I've got the Cherokee parked up north in my Dad's garage now that we're home (can't very well leave her on the street in San Francisco with no glass...) - a glass shop is coming out again tomorrow to try to put new glass in, but I'm anticipating that it's not gonna fit again.

Has anyone else had to replace their rear glass? We got the tail gate pretty well disected while at the glass shop last week. The frame is out & ready to go. Just wondering if I need to hit the junkyards, and if so, if anyone knows what years/models glass will be compatable?

PS - nothing like taking your recently-aquired FSJ on a road trip to really discover how much work it's going to need! I'll be posting A LOT in the next few days - boy do we have some questions! smile.gif

There was another post the other day that listed the compatible years and the actual glass size. Try the search function, its around here somewhere.

Suz, there were several posts on this and one of them was mine. I had someone ceck the difference between a 74 and a 79, they did not have a SS strip on either of thiers. My 70 has the strip. The link below is a really fast search tool for this board.

Aha! Thanks! The glass shop that my dad called got the glass in today by removing the SS strip. At least now I can bring her home to San Francisco and park her on the street!

Thanks for the Mega Index link - hadn't found that yet.

You're welcome, great way to search, don't know who get's the credit for it but it's very fast.

What glass shop is your Dad using? Also I noticed from your pics that your tailgate is different, what year is it? smile.gif

Hmmmm....the tailgate was on when we bought her. The Cherokee's a '75, dunno about the tailgate.
We've got a spare tailgate (also year unknown)sitting in storage (the one on her is all rust/bondo). But it's bright blue ;)
We just installed some aftermarket glass from Triumph Glass in Santa Rosa - we had to remove the ss frame, and it fit fine. We'll see how it works!
