i remember you guys discussing the dana 50 in a thread, but cant remember what thread it was.
if i remember correctly, the d50 uses in a nutshell,a 44 like diff, with 60 size knuckles and wheeljoints? are they 8 lug? what years do i find one?
this little cherokee axlebuilding project has been lots of fun,and im thinking when its done im gonna build a front 60 for my friend from a rear. ive decided i like building axles smile.gif sounds like a d50 would be a good donor for 60 spec inner and outer knuckles/hubs/spindles,etc.
id like to make a front 14 bolt, :D but that would require a custom inner shaft due to the oddball 1.5" 30 spline sahfts.
a rear 60 would be easier, cause he could buy a 35 spline locker and factory 35 spline upgrade shafts.
ur thots? smile.gif

The first few years of the new body style F250's used a D50 up front from what I have read. Not sure if the brand new ones still use the D50 or if its a D60.
EDIT: All the F350's had D60's.

all non-diesel F250 superdutys had the Dana 50.
the diesels and the 350's had the 60's.
it's gotta be a SD, the others had a whack ifs dana 50 in the pre 99 years.

I am clueless on this question, I did not even know a solid axle Dana 50 existed. Thought they were all Ford POS independent front suspension axles.
Okay, I'm editing this completely. Apparently solid axle Dana 50's started in 1999, before that they were all TTB.
They do have 1.5" axle shafts, with big joints, but the shaft tapers and is 30 spline, essentially the strength of a Dana 44 at that end. But it sounds like the outers are better, and I haven't heard of too many people breaking 44 shafts anywhere near the differential... it's normally at the joints.
But, I'm guessing that a Dana 50 is going to be about the same price as a Dana 60, so why not go all the way?
Also, I'm not sure, but is the lug pattern the same? I know some of the newer fords have a different 8 lug pattern.

erm...the newer fords use the same 8 lug patern as older 3/4-1 ton fords. GM and dodge use the same 8 lug patern as well afaik. If you go to look at aftermarket 8 lug wheels they all have the same spacing. Hummer wheels fit as well.

no they don't use the same 6.5" bolt circle as dodge anchevy
the new fords 99-up use a metric bolt pattern. 170mm. it works out to be 6-11/16" bolt circle

Didn't they come with that wierd 7 bolt pattern and that crapola no one wants bearing cartridge system the new Dana 60's have?

the 7bolt is on the light duty F250's. The SuperDuties have 8 lug metric spacing, like Sundowner said.

cool,thanx for the info,fellas.
tuck, the theory is that i can get a dana 50 dirt cheap, since they are not highly desired, and rob it of its inner knuckles, etc. to amke a front 60. of course,if we can only find them for 60 prices, you are 100% correct, it would make more sense just to get the 60 in the first place...
7 lugs? now that is strange...
