Vac disconect on the diff?

I have an 84 GW with the vaccum disconect on the diff and Heard the carrier would not accept gears lower than 3.73:1 and that a D44 Detroit locker or standard D44 carrier would not swap out....I need 5.13:1 gears,is what I heard correct? will I have to swap axles to get the gears I need?

You can use 'thick' gears. I put a standard Trak-loc carrier in my front diff. Worked fine. If the carrier in question has provisions for a cross shaft, it will work. The cross shaft holds the stub shaft in place. The Detroit Electrac wont work because there is no cross shaft. Your other option is to replace the drivers side axle shaft with one from an '85-'91 and remove the shift fork and collar from behind your diff cover.

OK, if I understand corectly... I swap the drivers axle shaft and use a Full detroit locker it will work?

I don't care if it ever unlocks, I can toss out all that stuff and plug the hole in the diff cover.
