Looking to swap out the tranny on the cherokee, it growls a bit, I also want a twin stick T case, basically I want something with a granny gear, that will bolt up to the 258 without many mods, I already plan on driveline lengthening/shortening.
thanks

you got a t-176 right? If your stayin w/manual and you got some $$ then i would go nv4500, if you don't want to spend 2k on a tranny then i would go t18a for the granny. If your going auto then you can't go wrong with the 700r4 or the th400 you can get adapters for **** near anything at www.advanceadapters.com. (http://www.advanceadapters.com.) Just rebuild the t-176, it is strong enough for the 258 and it adapts to lots of different t-cases like the Jeep rubicon 241j? and the pretty much every other tj/yj t-case that uses 4-1 gears. Or you could just go atlas for twin stickin

you could always go with a 435 tranny from a ford and a divorced 205 for twin sticking. i believe the bellhousing from your t-176 will fit a 435. you might have to drill one hole, but that's no big deal. those combos are almost indestructable and will give you the granny gear you want. plus, it's a lot cheaper than a NV4500, though i have seen 4500s for around $1500.

Also, since the 80 Cherokee has a driverside diff, you could just pull a married T18 or NP435 / NP205 setup from a Ford, bolt it in and watch everything downstream of the 205 explode because either of those 4 spds nor the 205 will be grenading on you.

this is true, but you will have to modify the shifter on the Ford t18 due to input shaft length but both will work nicely. i like the t18a b/c it's AMC and it's built for WWIII.
