i've heard whispers around places that say that the 727 on wags without the tow package had lockup TCs. i've also heard that the tow package included a 3 core radiator, 3.31 gears (confirmed http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/smile.gif), and a class IV tow hitch. anything i'm messing up/missing? thanks

I have a Cherokee Cheif '81 with all the stuff you mention on it. The lock-up converter is my only gues that it is. I do have the stock oil cooler, a class hitch and 3:31 gearing. You may want to take it to a tranny place to find out if it is lock-up. I'm pretty sure it is. Does yours have a 360 or 401?

401s were discontinued before the TF727 trannies were used.

wouldn't there be a tag or stamp on the tranny to tell you if it was lockup or not?

I do not think that any Jeeps with 727s had lock up converters on them. I beleive that only vehicles with fuel injection/computers had a lock up converter as the converter is controlled through the computer.

Kerry, according to the factory TSM's they had lockups on them in 82 and 83. They were non-lockup in 1980 though and in 1990 again. I don't have the TSM's for the between years but seems they were used for a couple of years anyway.
These weren't run from a computer but a switch valve on the valve body. Actuated by fluid pressure at approx 42 mph.

Me too Kerry http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/smile.gif Only thing I really know about AT's is that I don't like'm.
I also thought none were w/lockups but I remembered there was a thread on the fsj-list about why they dropped the lockup trannies cause they wouldn't hold up as long as the non-lockups or something similar so I dug in my TSM's.
