I have a 1981 Waggie with the 208 t-case. I have never engaged the 4WD. After checking the fluid (looks good) I searched my TSM and Spec manual for instructions - there are none. I don't have an owner's manual, which is probably where the details are.

Do I engage 4WD in drive, or in neutral? Do I engage the lock-out hubs in park or neutral? Can you tell me the order of the shift lever from top to bottom (floor)? (4H, 4L, N, 2WD)? Thanks for the help.

IIRC, from top to bottom it's 2hi, 4hi, N, 4lo. You can engage the lockout hubs at anytime, there isn't any protocol for that. It'll usually be part or neutral however unless you want to run alongside your jeep while you lock the hubs in ;) As far as the case, the 208 is shift on the fly so you can go into 4hi at pretty much any speed, and for 4lo the easiest way is to get rolling about 2-3mph, shift to neutral, and then go to 4lo. You can do this stopped as well in neutral but rolling reduces the grindage.

With my 208 I can shift intoo 4lo stopped with zzero problems. As any time I park on a steep hill (a lot) i have to put it in low or it goes rolling down the hill (stupid stinking 2.73 gears). I have a T176 BTW, auto may have to be different.
