View Full Version : Ram steering alternatives?

Ram steering isn't something I want to convert to if I can find an alternative. I'd like some feedback on this idea.... Put a smaller pulley on the power steering pump and put over sized lines to the steering box. Will this give me a little more turning power?

The pressure remains the same at the termination regardless of their diameter. Swapming pulleys to increase the RPM can give you slightly better performance (higher pressure) if done right, but most people have issues with airation and other matters. You pretty much either need a ram or bigger steering box with greater mechanical advantage.

Smaller pulley won't work. I treied and it spins the stock pump way to fast. Gets way to hot and all the fluid just bubbles over. I guess thats the airation mentioned above. Really the RAM deal is the cheapest and best solution in my book.

The lack of circulation creates a lot of heat. That's what I'm thinking happened in your situation.....

what if a person put on a smaller pully, and added a larger, remote sump,so the pump would have plenty of fluid? :D

Im not sure if lack of fluid is the problems. It would spin mine too fast at idle, with the smaller pulley. At idle and not turning the wheel, it was whining and bubbling. When it would rev, the pump sounded like it was gonna explode. I think something internally just can't handle spinning that fast.

Thanks for the input...I ordered my ram two days ago.
