ive had great luck with the harbor frieght hoods. there like lottery tickets though, some are good, and some are a waste of money. i heard of some people getting flashed first time, but mine has lasted a couple months so far..

Jackson is a very reputable brand, I buy lots of their stuff.

My welding friends love the fiberboard ones that are rivited together. They are cheap and really light. They are like 30-40 dollars. Don't think they are autodarkening though.

We use several diffrent brand but the only auto darkening ones we have are harbor freight ---- the first one we bought worked for 2 weeks then would not darken anymore so we swaped it aout for another one and it has worked for months----like youngjeeper said you have to be lucky at HF

mine is a "Weld-it" brand auto-dark from the local tractor supply co. (actually Big R). I use their stuff all the time and it has never failed me. after I zapped my eyes a few months ago, I shelled out $100 for this nice hood. it is solar recharge, but i've yet to have it go dead. I hang it under the shop lights so it stays charged.

after getting welding flash 2x with 2 harbor freight auto darkening specials i steped up and got the speedglass helmet. works awesome and no more issues
