alright all you guys w/ the holley truck avengers. i got it installed and adjusted the idle mixture per the instructions and the best vac i could get is 13" Hg. now is that ok or did i do something wrong. also i cant seem to get the float bowl level right. if i go too high gas starts coming out of the lock screw. and help is appreciated.
thanks

Vac seems too low, i got almost 20 on mine. What was your vac before? You didnt by any chance swap a new cam in there too did you? :D Adjust fuel so you can just barely see it coming up to the site screws... sorry if you knew that...

I think you have a vac leak some where. Don't turn those adusting nuts to much in either direction. Go in small increments or you may fly past where you want to be.

well first off the adjusting nut is WAY off then because i adjusted (tried to) it a couple of turns. i did it is small increments though.

paul any idea how many turns out i should go if i tighten it down all the way. i haven’t adjusted the secondary float any chance could i go off that as a reference.(should they be about the same?)

and smooshy i did swap a new cam in, the summit k-8600. (272 intake/282 exhaust duration). ive since gotten the vac to about 14" to 15" with mixture adjustment.

thanks

You can go off the other as a starting point. Don't tighten it down all the way, You will strip the key on the adjusting nut.

If you cant figure out what the level is at by looking through the plug, you might just pull the plug and do it the old school way.

Whats annoying is when you screw the floats down and the fuel level actaully rises instead of dropping becuase of the displacement of fuel. Make sure you let the fuel level drop first, not that you didnt know that...

i always mess with the float leve with it running just to be sure its still getting fuel in and out otherwise i tried it with just the electric pump runnin but it didnt work right i filled the intake with a lot of fuel in the process. you should be pulling alot more vacume than that im thinkin at least 17" i had a pretty serious can in my truck and it still could pull 16" at an idle. theres gotta be a vacume leak somewhere or maybe not and its just an AMC thing?

alright well, i tried adjusting the float and it never came up(the fuel) should i just keep going or is there a point where it just wont turn anymore. ive already gone like 5 or 6 complete turns of the adjustment nut. if i shake the car i can see some gas but its not to the hole yet. should i just keep going until it comes out?
Thanks

you may have to pull the bowls off and bend the float tab. it sounds like you adjusted it all the way and its still not reading correctly.
the floats sometimes are way out from the factory.

I concur with midnight, although I have never run into a new holley needing to have the tabs bent, only on replacement floats when rebuilding a holley... Counter Clockwise brings the level up...

Are we talkin' about the front or rear float???

I had to bend my rear float tab, finally. It about drove me carzy for a couple of days. And yes, my sight plugz srewed out.

alrighty well i got the float level up, i guess it got screwed down so much that it wasnt even going up, but now that thats fixed and i have the idle mixture adjusted, when i take off it bogs for a second then goes. it wants to die but if i feather the throttle its ok. what would this be? jets?
thanks

Try adjusting or replacing accel pump... When it bogs can you watch the exhaust to see if it smokes? Black smoke means running rich obviously. It could also bog if mixture is off, holleys seem to do good for me running a hair rich, sometimes full turn after highest vac...

Im thinking about getting a holley 670cfm truck avenger. would you guys recommend it over other carbs? thanks

My Accel pump was stiking on my new avenger. It like to drove me nuts. I could floor it and it would just die. So on day I just reached in and manually pumped it several times ( The little arm conected to the red spring on the front of the carb) and walla it would run wide open. Although I still need to adjust the rest a bit it is doing better now.

thanksAdjust the accelerator pump shot a little at a time. Mine still stumbles slightly when cold but runs like a champ when warmed up.

If you're doing mostly street driving with occasional off road, an Edelbrock 1406 (600cfm) or one of their new Thunder series (#1826 for off road applications) will be fine. Just install the off road needle and seats if you get the 1406. The 1826 comes with them already installed.

thanks though.

Go with the Holley, there awesome. My truck Avenger runs sweet. I can take it almost vertical or near pucker factor and she still runs and if you give it the gas it just wants to keep clinbing, side tilts are as scary as you want them to be without any problems.

The Edelbrocks blow off road, I switched mine to off-road needle and seats and it loaded up like crazy on any incline, also if you got it steep enough with the nose in the air, the cam for high idle would engage and you would look like an idiot coming off or up a hill at 1500 to 2000 rpms. Just my experience.

it is going to be an everyday driver, but still an off road machine. would you still recommend the truck avenger?
