o.k on my jeep ALL my emmsions have been removed by a PO well i was wondering On the back of my manifold i have this big round thing it looks like a vacuum diaphram - at first i thought it was an EGR valve but then i was told a little thing to the left of it(passengers side) is the EGR valve. is that true and of it is what does it do.
P.s my jeep is at my grandpas house so i cant get a picture of it.
picture of it

The EGR valve should be on the rear of the manifold toward the driver's side. What you initially described should be it.

I do not know if in 1974 they used a separate backpressure sensor or not. That may be the smaller part you are referring to.

The '74 probably didn't have an EGR. That may be something else, or it may have a swapped motor, or I may be wrong about the 74. But '77 was when they really started putting emissions on them.

on mine someone took out the egr and the pipes plugged it a long time ago and also changed to a non emssion manifolds...so didnt even know it but from your description it sounds like an egr.....

Try posting this in General Tech and you might get more help.

are you talking about the grommet/PCV valve thing behind the Carb?
On my 73 the egr valve sits kinda near the carb on the side and the PCV valve is behind the carb.

74 has the EGR with the exhaust back pressure sensor

and is it that diaphram thing?
