I am in the process of rebuilding my Transfer case, putting in new bearings, seals, etc...I have found that there is a snap ring on my front input shaft behind one of the gears that is not on the parts breakdown and is not mentioned in the disassembly instructions in my manual...has anyone run across this?? The tear-down procedures have me beat the shaft out of the case without removing this snap ring..as a result, I destroyed the old one..luckily nothing else was damaged..but I would like to know why it is not mentioned..I am using a book for a 1977 and mine is a 1974..looks the same, but that might be the problem...plus I have no way of knowing if this is the original unit..could be newer or older for all I know ...Any experts out there with practical experience????

front input shaft? not sure what youre refrering to.if your refering to the shaft that the front output yoke attaches to,mine does not have any snap rings.i just beat it out,and the race came right out of the case. if you are refering to the shaft that the rear yoke rides on,ive never had that part apart.i just remove the bolts and remove that whole thing from the case, leaving the yoke, and everything still together.

i have disassembled a couple of cj cases, and a couple of fsj cases, and all of them ive messd with have been 77-79,so maybe there are some differences n 74.hmmmmm...

let me know which shaft youre refering to,and which gear it is behind, and maybe i can be of further assistance...
