Anyone know of an aftermarket swing away for a 33" tire with gas can or high lift jack attachments that works on a 1979 Chief w/t?

Check the end of the rainbow!!! Ha Ha smile.gif

Don't think you will find one but a lot of guys will tell you how they adapted one's from other trucks...

I'm in the process of building one that replaces the bumber with boxed tubing and carries the weight of the tire on the frame. It also has a receiver for a drop hitch and pulling point. When it's done and I figure out how to post pics you can see it.

Sounds good Old Goat......Can't wait to see the pics.... smile.gif

I saw an older Wag here in town with a swing away, I'm gonna track the owner down and find out what he used, I'll try to get pics of it.

someone in here used a CJ and mounted it to the bumper. I swung up/down and looked pretty good. I don't remember where it was but he had a website on how to do it too. I will see if I can find it again.

rselina, that is what I'm looking for. smile.gif

highspeedgi, I found a few cj swing aways on ebay pretty cheap. If they work then that would a great option. I'll be looking for a link to that thread ;) thanks guys.....

Donzi, do you have the same kind of tail light the rig in the pic has? If so, the CJ tire carrier won't work. It won't clear the tail light assembly, it's not tall enough. I just tried fitting my CJ tire carrier over the tail light and it won't fit. There's no good way to mount it to the main body, and it's awfully short, it would only extend to about the middle of the tailgate. Maybe an aftermarket one will clear the tail lights, but it wills till only cover half your back end. I'd look into fabricating one. Get a metal cutoff wheel and cut 1 1/2" square meatal tube to fit. Then get a local muffler shop or someone to weld it up for you. If you're realy ambitious, get a welder and do the complete thing yourself. smile.gif

rselina, I think thats the way I'm gonna go. I have an old miller 220 cracker box that I am going to convert to gas and wire feed (mig). I'll just wait and do it the right way ;)
Thanks guys.

Here's a place that makes a rear bumper with just about every possible option: http://www.kenmtn.com/

I emailed them a few months ago for a quote but can't find the $ they gave me. It's similar to the one on the Blazer on their site.

I would think a CJ bumper would have to be extended. I did some measurements of the bumper on my scrambler and I think it was almost a foot and a half shorter than the stock bumper on my chero.

Bulletproofmfg.com has some pretty cool stuff for cherokees. One of them looks like it would clear the turn signal. Might slightly block the backup light on right side.

I've asked them about buying just tire swing mount and latch for welding onto something like Brad Chelsey's bumpers that are flat top and 2" wide.

Might work, also can carry gas cans and jack...

Yakima has a really neat bike carrier that could be used as a great base / start for a swing away tire carrier.
I have the carrier and my make one just to see how I like it.
The yakima carrier I am speaking of can be seen at the yakima web site, www.yakima.com (http://www.yakima.com) its the Terragate 2. You would only have to replace the vertical post which easly comes off by removing 1 bolt and then just slide a manufactured piece in its place. just a thought

Why not make a swing 'down' carrier? Since our tail gates go down. Use a torsion bar to help 'lift' the tire back up.

Just kinda thinking out loud....

I bet it would only take a few hours to fab a swingdown carrier to fit in a receiver hitch with a bracket for relocating the license plate. If a guy needs to trailer, it would fairly easy to accomodate a receiver too.

With the right mounting bracket for the tire you could even set it up so that you don't have to pick the tire up. This could be a big help when you have a really big tire.

I can't do this to my jeep. With a tire on the back it won't fit in the garage...

I've got a good cad drawing of a pipe front, back and spare tire carrier that will accomodate up to 37 12.50's. You'll need a torch, and welder and some skill, but its bullet proof and looks slick .

I have a good instruction booklet from Valley.. they used to make swing-aways for FSJ's... the booklet and all bracketry (minus the large swinging gate) came with my wife's 80 W/T upon purchase.... I may use all the peices and see what I can come up with in the future.

the pics are great.. almost cad-like.... holds a 5 gallon Jerry can as well....

For those interested: I finished building a swing away tire carrier. It's very solid and mounts to a square tube bumber w/ a receiver. It's large enough to hold a 38" tire. I trail tested it the other day. Used one of the uprights as a winching point--didn't even flex it. :D

If any body wants pics to see how it's built let me know and I'll e-mail 'em to you.

Here are a couple of the rack that I bought off of ebay and then modied it to fit my wag and accept a 35" tire. I am going to weld on some brackets for my high lift this summer
(if I don't put it on the roof rack).

I just picked up a rear swing away for my wag at pick a part. $15. It came off a later cherokee and mounts to the bumper and side of the fender. nice unit that will need a little adapting for my custom bumper. I'll have to post it when I get it mounted.

I just picked up a piece of 2"x2"x1/8 sq. tube to fab something with an old CJ tire carrier.
I'm gonna use my 2" receiver to hold it. I plan on working on it tonight. I'll post pics when it's done.

Here's the late cherokee rack I found at the picapart. $15.! It fit really well with a little bit of adapting at the lower hinge and the latch. I just installed it today. Nice thing is that it will accept the larger tire/rim with no spacer. http://www.fullsizejeeps.com/jeeps/files/1963-1983-Wagoneers/tirerack.jpg

I know this carrier is on an xj, but man is it sweet. Holds tire, can and highlift and looks like it clears all lights.

They say they don't make them for fsj...but how much narrower is an xj?
