Skid plates. My TJ is almost completely protected from rocks underneath. What do I need to protect under my 90 GW? Gas tank, xfer case, anything else? Do you have to make your own or does someone carry a decent line of plates for FSJs?
Thanx

well one thing to remember is on Sj everything is above the frame. Unlike your TJ which has a lot hanging down below it. So it makes it harder to damage things on an SJ. The tank should already have a skid plate. Thats all I have on my rigs, and all I have ever needed really. Although some rocker protection would be nice on the chero hehe.

I'll probably wait and see if I hit anything, then protect it. smile.gif

Damage Report from my first run in the 81 Cherokee:

1 broken U-bolt, 2 bent
Smashed driver's side rocker and door
Lost both mirrors

Everything else was fine and we dragged that rig across every rock and up every ledge we could find. I'd suggest U-bolt skids or a U-bolt flip (unless you are SOA) and some rocker protection.

i got no skid plates either. i did somehow manage rip the little skid plate partially off the oil pan on my engine one night, creating a nice leak  i have no idea how somethin reached up high enuff to grab that without any other evidence of touching anything else. that was back in the days of driving it to the woods, and i had to shove one of my socks in there to get it home :D

other than that ive never had any prollems with stuff grabbing the tranny or trasnfer case.

i have a 3" body lift,so my rockers have never reeally been in alot of danger from too high a breakover angle. if you do make a rocker gaurd, nerf bar, rock slider,or whatever you want to call it,just make sure it sticks out past the rocker enuff to protect the sides of the body. i can put one of my nerf bars on a tree, turn into it,and pivot around it without touching the body. if id had them 3 years ago,my body likely would never have gotten so bad that i had to cut it all off and remake it. tho i prolly woulda anyway ;)

Factory fuel tank plate, and a 96 GMC pickup transfer case plate under the Quadratrac. I must be doing something wrong or something because I've dragged that plate plenty of times. I built U-bolt skid plates and they are worth every nickel of time I put in to them. Rocker protection is a must when going in deep, it will save some sheetmetal and becomes a valuable tool if used correctly.

I dont have any skid plates either and went wheelin a a pretty hard trail with 31's. Only clerance issues I had were the pumpkins and a u-bolt which was more me not paying attention than anything....still had good clerance when I drove out of the same trail on a flat 30" tire...but from what I hear other than that most people that have them fab them up...not a big markey yet for FSJ's

"GET BENT 4x4" Plates ,they will make anything you want for a good price --I mean anything -- you come up with it and give them dimentions and they will make it --cages, bumpers ,plated or expanded(so ya can see the rocks your climbin) floor pans, rockers ,roof racks --you think it ,we (they)can make it (and you thought it could'nt be done), Why I (I mean they LOL)made a diomand plate hood last week for a C.J. It cost high doller cause too much shiny and the Jeep Gods get angry! I am not pluggin my shop at all as you can planly see!!!LOL (I am the owner of it by the way --just startin to get off the ground) I am still broken so I do the lay-outs and my bro does the cuts and bends for me to weld --once again THERE IS NO PLUG HERE OR THERE WOULD BE A PHONE #

Regardless of your opinion of the Pirate 4x4 bulletin-board, their Vendor forum is an excellent place to find sources for parts you need. Perhaps Adam would have some time over the next few months to introduce such a forum under the "Classifieds" section.

Given the 5000+ members on this board, a vendor would get a lot of eyeballs for posting there, and us FSJ freaks wouldn't have to go searching everywhere for our parts.

It looks like it needs some new posts. :D Hopefully it'll happen. smile.gif I'd sure check it... I'm always looking for vendors that cater to the FSJs. (Although, BJs is still the best I've dealt with to date! :D )

ALL of you people need to get more creative with your fabrication. Many of us have friends that can shape metal, be it a grinder or a torch. First, fabricate some custom spring perches that will mold around the edge of the pumpkin houseing. Next, take apart your "U bolts" and flip them so the nuts are on the top side. This will solve the problem of bent U bolts. To fabricate the underbody skidplate, weld some 1/4 inch steel stock to the frame. ( the piece should be just big enough that you get enough contact for the weld to hold, and still have enough left over and hanging out that you can drill a hole to put a large bolt through.) Do this in as many locations as possible. The more places you have, the less likely the skidplate will be ripped off. Now go to the local machine shop and custome order a sheet of steel to fit your demensions. Once you have the steel, balance it on a floor jack and get it into position. Once its in position, mark the holes and drill them. Refit the sheet and bolt it in place. You now have a skidplate that will take any abuse including a land mine. It has certain drawbacks such as added wieght, and one must remove it to do any work. Good luck fabricating.
