I replaced the starter today with a rebuilt unit from Autozone. The old starters bendix gear would not engage.
There's a noise emiting from the starter area that sounds like a fan hitting a radiator shroud while the GW is engaged in reverse or drive. There is no sound while in neutral or park. The sound will escalate while accelerating and diminish or none when you step off the gas.
I have removed and reattached the new starter to ensure that the starter wasn't atached wrong.
What's the cause of this noise?
Is it starter related?
Thanks!

Did you make shure the nose of the starter was the same leingth? Jeep used a Ford starter and as you know Ford changed things quit often. The parts man might have not been able to find the exact one Jeep used so grabed another one Ford made.

That sounds possible if it is from autozone http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

Porkchop & Mhoffor:
I think your both correct.
The casting numbers on the nose are different on the original starter compared to what Autozone and NAPA presented me as a replacement.
The nose casting numbers were the same on the NAPA and Autozone. So I figure these two shops are in the parts business ......trust them........not!
I am going to call the zone and get my old starter back and find someone to rebuild the bendix gear.
Thanks!

Sounds familiar.
Check for a broken flywheel/flexplate.

What's the best way to check for a broken flywheel and or flex plate?
What should I be looking for?
My first thought would be to remove the starter and rotate the engine with a breaker bar.
Could the thrust washer on the crank have gone bad?

I had my starter rebuilt by Vinelad Auto Electric ($ 62.00) new bendix gear, bushings and armature.
No problems at all now!
I will never buy a part like this at the "Zone " again.
