View Full Version : my version of a shackle flip...

is there any reason why I couldn't do a shackle flip like that done on the older pin-type hangers (literally flipping the shackle from pointing up to pointing down)? Couldn't I cut off the whole shackle hanger, flip it upsidedown, so the shackle faces down, the reweld it back on? What kind of ramifications would this have?

I recently saw pics of a truck on here where someone did just exactly that.
I think a couple of things to be aware of are that in Todd's inversion kit he also lowers the front spring hanger location to balance the pinion angle increase of the lowered rear hanger. Then,if you simply invert the complete rear hanger you would want to keep the same angle of the shackle to the spring which might require you actually moving the complete hanger forward. If your shackle is at 90Degrees to your spring it will ride stiff and flip forward binding your spring up on extreme articulation or braking.

Yeah somebody did it on here, forget who. But they didnt have enough travel and broke the mount off the frame. Todds kit is well worth the money, its bolt on, and has all the bugs worked out for shackle angle and such.
Well i can tell u who that happend to ,,,
ME<<<<<<<<
now im busy tryin to rebuild the whole rear spring bracket set-up.
so take my word,,,,buy the kit,,,,
i have pics,,of the damage,,if u need proof

gee wiz
i just got me some rear springs that were 2" longer in the rear half and fliped the shackle down. no welding, no bolting, well cept for bolting in the nu spring ;)

Todd's kit would be great...except I don't want and reeeaaalllly don't need that much lift.

then go with lift springs, flipping the shackle without moving the front still gives you about 5.5" of lift.
Ken: where did you get your rear springs?

I did this on my leaf spring setup. Never had any problems with it. But you can't reweld it in the same position, you have to measure so it has enough travel. And you should adjust the pinion angle after it's done.
Some more info here (http://www.fullsizejeep.com/1024/leafsuspension.htm)

Ken, so you did what I'm talking about, and just had some longer main leaves made? Did that effect your pinion angle at all?

yes it will.
with the flip u will be tilting the pinion up. when u install the flip and the jeep is on the ground, u can determine what shims r needed. i used some tapered lift blocks to point the pinion back down again.
