View Full Version : Just about winch time, a few questions

Looking at getting my winch once my new bumper gets here. Hopefully, I can have the dough by late January or so.

So, I need to prepare a little, and have a few questions...

Would a 9k pound winch be appropriate? I'm not planning on ever having to winch myself up the side of the grand canyon or anything, but if I get one, I want it to work when I do need it.

Would I have to go with a dual battery set-up for occasional winch use?

What do you think of this brand???

9000 is plenty Brad. I've been running vertical Warns(8000/8274 models) for 30 years on Jeeps and various 3/4 ton trucks and never yet had a winch failure or found an 8000 inadequate to get the job done. Granted a cheap winch(Ramsey/Milemarker) at 8000 may eat solenoids up in a hurry during extreme use but a Warn won't. Well shouldn't anyway but I'm not familiar with any of the horizontal Warns.

edit:
I like the dual batt set ups but not 100% needed if it's just for the occasional ooopsy....but it's nice to have the extra batt if really needed so I do run dual batts. For me the cost of a couple of relays, cables and the extra batt are worth the added security but that's an individual thing depending on need/use. It's something you can easily add later but not required at first. Better to have one winch and one battery than no winch at all. ;)

Brad, my now exwife has a brand new in the box Warn 8000i. Thats the one with the integrated solenoids above the spool. Her dad worked at Warn. It is new in the box never even been taken out. Roller fairlead, hand remote, cable, winch everything. I just called her and she said she wanted 650. It's heavier than Rosie Odonnel so by the time you add shipping from Portland to where you are, you might be better off buying local. Let me know if you are interested. Al T.

Brad, I wouldn't get anything less than a 9000lb for a rig as big as a FSJ. I HIGHLY recommend any of the Warn HS9500s. They are one serious brute of a winch and really fast to boot. I wouldn't trade mine for any other model. Not even the 8274.

I think with what he stated he needs it for it would work fine. I would agree for nutjob wheelin like you are doing Andrew I would want a hard puller too. Overkill is everything when it comes to parts, cages ect. I do have an upgraded Bosch motor on my 8274 including 3/8ths cable. I like it lots... Do the 9500s winches have 150 feet of cable like the 8274???

Overkill on a winch is never a bad thing. Get the most winch you can afford. The winch manufacturers recommend at least 1.5 times the weight of the vehilce. If you get a FSJ stuck in heavy thick mud up to the frame rails you will be glad to have the biggest baddest winch you can get. Just my .02 worth. I run a 10,000 lb Warn.

i agree, too much winch is never a bad thing.true you may not need more than 8000 lbs most of the time, but the 1 time you are stuck really bad youll be glad you sprung for al the winch you have ;) when my pto winch was still operable,it would either get me out or break my frame in half if i put the tranny in granny 1st :D im not sure what it actually will pull, but we have never stalled it

i havent ever used an 8274 or any of the other warn winches, but there are people who swear by the 8274,and say it is very conservatively rated. id like to have an 8274 for the front of my rig,and designate my chicago electric for trailer use

I have an M8274 with the Bosch motor. I've pulled Bushwood a few times and it doesn't seem to pull any slower than when It's just spooling with no weight! Sometimes I wish it had a Great Googley MoogleyGreat Googley MoogleyGreat Googley MoogleyGreat Googley Moogley throttle - so I could slow it down!

Brad, you'll be fine with an 8,000 lb winch... admit it, you're never going to put that pretty Jeep in anything too extreme ;) Plus, chances are, I'll be there and I'll throw you a cable... that's 16,0000 lbs... with snatchblocks, we're at 32,000 lbs... ...

Sweet, nothing like the tree thats 15 feet away from the last few wraps on the drum. Yep, overkill is a good thing... Now get that buggy done so I/we can live vicariously through you :^))

Your right, I'm not planning on anything too extreme. It will probably be used for pulling bushes as it will for me being stuck. Basically, I was just trying to figure out if a 9000 lb'er was a practical option.

9k will be just fine. With a snatch block, you're up to 18k and that should pull the whole county along with your truck.

I used my 8274 with one battery, and unspooled it 3 times up a steep hill. Only time I gave it a rest was while unspooling. I used the engine also, but really abused it that day. Had absolutley no problems. And like they say, with a snatch block, you got plenty. I just recently upgrades to a 105 amp alt(had a 66amp) just for when Im running my dual fans, all lights on, and stereo blasting some night:) Dennis
