208 from another 80-87 Wag or 80-83 Chero. It's a good part-time tcase. Don't know how it'll match with Ford axle? Chev front axle the years Chev used a 208 is on the pass side. Better decide first which axles you're going to use before you go tcase shopping.

im most likely getting the ford d60.mines got the 229 case.is it worth rebuilding? and if i did rebuild it would it hold up to 38s and locked 1 tons?

I wouldn't but that's just me. I'd spring for the 208. The 229's viscous coupler is $400+ alone and then the chain and then bearings and seals and...nah I'd get a 208.

sorry, mines the 228 case,NOT the 229. is the 228 worth rebuilding. it would probobly be hard to find a 208.

if you need the beef of a front 60,i wouldnt mess with the 228 or 229. if you can pick up a ford 60 for that cheap id do it before it disapears ;) if i could find one it would be worth it to me to swap in a driver side t case- there is an undeniable cool factor of a reverse cut, high pinion ford 60

on what t case to run with a driver drop, youd have to do some creative parts swapping to make a driver drop 205 that wouls bolt to your 727. youd prolly have to swap in a dodge tailsahft and adapter into the 727,then swap the dodge 205 input gear into the ford 205.

if you dont mind aluminum and chain drive, the 208 is a decent case, and the only FSJ/jeep case id consider.other versions or models will require mods to swap,or to eliminate a rear slip yoke,or to be made strong enuff ;) 208 from a FSJ is definately your strongest low buck,"bolt it in" option.

an atlas will bolt right on as well ;)

last and not least,i personally would swap in a ford np 435/205 or a t18/205 if i were gonna run a driver side front end. both are easily bolted to an amc engine, making adding a pedal cluster and tracking down FSJ clutch linkage parts the hardest part of the swap. but my opinion may be biased,i hate autos ;)

The J208's are not that hard to find, you just have to look. I picked one up a couple of weeks ago at a salvage yard for $119.

It will use the same shifter you have on your 229.

you mean the p.o.s. vacume switch on the dash and the cheesy little flag lever under the seat?

You'll need to rework and use the H/L flag shifter your 228 has or if the 208 came from behind an automatic try to get the linkage w/it. The linkage from a 208 from behind a manual trans won't work either. The vacuum dash stuff you won't need anymore.

so the lever will go from selecting just H/L to shifting 2hi-4hi-N-4lo? did any of the cherokees or j trucks come with a regular shifter in the floorboard. i read where stuka had the real lever in a j truck.

Yeah the H/L lever will do all modes. The 208's from behind manual trannies used a conventional floor shifter but the linkage won't work/fit with the AT. 208's from behind an auto trans used a variation of the H/L lever yours has.
