When I start the motor it runs and sounds just fine. After it has warmed up and I drop it into either D, N, or R I hear a sound like a small hammer on metal for about 3-5 seconds and then it stops. It does it shifting between the three. If I go from park to N it will do it, from P to R and so on. It drives just fine. It does not do it while driving at all. When I get back from driving a distance it no longer does it at all even when I shift between the three. Any ideas. It is about 5-6 tings, it is not long enough for me to find where it is coming from. I guess if the engine was the problem it would do it all the time and while driving. I just want to make sure I do not damage anything down the road. I have just had the tranny rebuilt last week, and I am going to take it to them tomorrow because they let of a cover. I am sure it will not do it when I get it to the shop. I just want to check with you all before I take it anywhere

Any ideas would be great. Thanks

Hi, Shadowfax,

Make sure they got the starter and/or flexplate on correctly--it sounds like they may have an alignment problem between the two. Sometimes when the starter solenoid binds it won't let the little gear pull back fast enough after start and it will grind on the flexplate for a while.

Good luck...CR

Well could it be that even though I can crank it and let it run for a long time and then I can shift it and the sounds will start..
I do feel like someting it out of alignment..

Have a couple of friends stand around the truck when you make the noise happen. Hopefully, they will be able to tell where it is coming from.

Old tranny = no noise

Rebuilt tranny = new noise = their problem

make 'em fix it

I think it is coming from the starter. I did damage the starter last week when I sank the float and tried to start it over and over.
