View Full Version : Detroit Truetrac???

Ok, so I have my front axle apart right now, and I got to thinking..."why not put a traction aiding device in it while it's apart?" I don't think I'd want a full locker in the front, just so I can still steer halfway normally while in 4WD. So, my options are Auburn Gear or Detroit Truetrac pretty much. I am thinking the Truetrac, because it has helical gears instead of clutches...seems to me that'd be more durable.
Any other product I have glanced over?
Any thoughts on the subject???

I think you will do good with either one of those, they are the best in the LSD world IMO. I went with the TrueTrac only cuz I got a good deal on it from completeoffroad.com. I just put it it a few weeks back, took it out wheeling this weekend and it was awesome!

i agree,id go with the truetrack. it uses no clutches or special oil. the auburn gear is done once the clutch cones are worn out,no replacing them other than buying a whole new unit.
as a LSD goes i am very much impressed with the truetrac. prolly 95% of the people would be perfectly happy with it. steering with the front end engaged is not any tougher than with an open diff, and the unit can be tricked, with some brake modulation, into sending at least some torque to a wheel even if the other side is dangling helplessly in the air. i have also put mine thru much abuse in the form of clutch dumping inthe middle of hills, and wheels leaving contact with the earth during full trhottle attacks on muddy, slippery rutted out hills.
if a LSD will suit your needs, the truetrac is absolutely, without a doubt the one to use.

I've got trutracs in both ends of my TJ and I love them. :D I'd recommend them to anyone. They've made a big difference in the jeep's abilities to get through all sorts of gunk.
I'd love to have them in my GW, too. Maybe later. ;)

how bad IS steering with a locker in the front?

Terrible with an automatic locker and full time 4wd. Not so bad if you have a 2wd mode.
Spools suck in the front no matter what.
But it doesn't make any difference if you use lockout hubs. Just unlock them on the street. :D

I've driven with a welded (spooled) front, and it's not that bad as long as the terrain is loose and you're not turning hard. You can just unlock the hub on the short side and putter around in 3 wheel drive until you get to an obstacle where you need all 4 turning. When you've got all 4 turning it makes a HUGE difference. YoungJeeper since you'll be wanting to wheel Tellico and not driving on 4x4 on the street down here in the South, lock up the front and get some manual hubs. You'll be happy you did.

The stuff I do requires me to be able to steer well in 4wd...and not have to jump out to unlock a hub to turn. I think the Truetrac will be the best bet for my front. Later, the rear will get a full detroit or something.

the true trac is one of the best for front axle applications!! i have broken 3 axles in my old f250
with a true trac, but that was driver error :-( they are diffenately tough!!! and dont cause alot of hard input to steering when both hubs are locked in!!!

How are they in the rear, for let's say, a mostly street rig that goes offroad, and with a driver/owner that can't blow the cash on a selectable locker? I am thinking truetrac one day, so at least I can press the brake and move a still tire. Would it hold up with moderate driving in the rear of a J-10?

I had a Trutrac in my CJ in the front and I loved it. It handled great, gave me lots of traction, and was good on the street, too.

Danielthe street is a different story. it will depend largely on your intended use, driving style, tire size, and engine output. ;)
my frined has broken 2 of them in a rear 12 bolt in his 77 gmc with 33s and a very built, injected 350. he got the truetrac after breaking 2 auburn gears. he has broken axlesahfts as well.
he hauls stuff in it, tows his cherokee to the trails with it, and drives it daily,so it does see ALOT of hard use. not to mention he drives it like a kid in a hot rod ;) with his foot on the floor alot of the time
hes now running a 14 bolt. smile.gif

I feel comfortable with it in the front and 36" tires, only gets used when I go off-road. Seems to me the slippage would greatly decrease the chances of anything breaking up front with a full locker on the rear end.

Ok, it's a done deal. ordered my Truetrac today from www.reiderracing.com (http://www.reiderracing.com) . They were by far the cheapest from all the big gear houses, and they're in Michigan so that helps a lot on shipping. smile.gif WOO HOO
