While I have my J20 apart I thought I'd rebuild my front CV joint so it doesnt end up like other FSJers on here with cracked TH400 cases. I would like to know how much it costs to rebuild it? I will be doing it myself. And where do you get the kit for it?

Also should I be thinking sbout replacing the chain in the Q-Trac? The J20 has like 94,000 miles on it but I didnt get to drive it much but it seemed fine. Where can you get the best chain and how much?

I had the front driveshaft for my 73 J4000 done at a driveshaft shop for about $75. This was all new u joints, the centering bearing inside the CV, and balanced- very inportant when this unit is taken apart. Leave this one to the experts.

Anybody got anymore suggestions on this stuff?
I had my rear done last weekend and the rebuilder said, leave the CV joint to the pros. I went to a very good shop in Santee, Ca called East County Driveshafts.
Good Luck

Greg,
Take it to a shop and have it done... not worth it if you've never done it...I never do them cuz I think a little money is worth a little warranty http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/wink.gif

Greg,
There is a square plug in the back slope of the QT about midpoint. Have QT Fluid available when you unscrew this plug. With the rig on jacks and no tension on the QT, remove the plug and insert a small screwdriver all the way into the hole against the chain until it stops. Place your finger on the screwdriver butted up against the case on the screwdriver (as a reference point) and slowly retract the screwdriver til you can barely feel the chain touching the tip of it. The distance between your finger and the case should be no more than 3/4"... if so your chain is stretched. I recommend a Spicer chain... around $130. They are the stronger of the two that I compared by design.
Your chain can be replaced without removing the QT from the rig. Remove the lo range unit, retaining ring behind it and case half. Have two people, it makes it easier. With both of you under the rig, evenly slide out the center dif and sun gear with chain and replace the chain and reinstall. A seal/gasket kit should run about $40, but if you have no leaks, just use some RTV around the case half. The lo range should have an 'O' ring seal. some QT's have an 'O' ring seal between the case halves, mine was just machined aluminum and didn't have one, so RTV worked well.
Any more q's just ask.... we are here for you! http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

RB--I had a shop replace my QT, and now there's a permanent bead of fluid where the case halves join. It's not much, but leaks just rub me wrong regardless. Should I attempt to find a gasket, or would high-temp RTV work just as well? The bolts appear to be fully torqued, maybe there's just a minute flaw on one of the case surfaces that's allowing fluid to seep out.

BnB,
I have not seen a gasket for the case halves... just the 'O' style and the machined finish style. If you want to fix the leak, you may want to wait til it's time fo a fluid change as not to waste the QT fluid. But I would use the orange hi-temp RTV... it's what I used and don't leak at all. you can do the same procedure as I explained above...I wouldn't waste money on a gasket either... RTV will fill imperfections nicely with a good bead.

Todd,
Well if I did the chain test right it looks like it probably needs a new chain. Where did you get the Spicer chain at? The best thing about replacing it is I already have the whole body off the truck so I can work on the QT easy. http://cgi.tripod.com/smilecwm/cgi-bin/s/net/flash.gif

Greg,
My local speed shop had one in stock (believe it or not). you can probably order one thru a website or your local parts store for about the same.
