Muffler / Cat Conv. question

How much, if any, does the catalytic converter muffle noise? Reason for asking is that my cat ran away with my smog pump and I will be replacing my muffler this weekend. I have read all the threads re: mufflers, however what I want is QUIET!!! Passenger car quiet if possible. Any and all brand and model suggestions are appreciated!

a cat does muffle noise quite a bit.... I'm fancy to the flowmasters so you wont like them without a cat....

Im running a catco hi-flow cat and a stock muffler on my G-wag, and its a quiet truck!

whats the fun in quiet? i have a hi-flow cat and turbo muffler. it's no-where near quiet.

For one thing, The AMC engines are not usually quiet. If you do want quiet without a cat, call summit or jegs ect. and ask the sales rep about a good "quiet muffler.

You may want to replace the cat with a resonator this will help quiet things down before it gets to the muffler. Then get a stock type generic muffler. Also getting a muffler that has a longer and bigger case will be quieter than a smaller muffler and make the tone a little deeper.
