Don,t know if this is possible but hear goes,Could you move the rear spring mounts so that the springs mount to the BOTTOM of the frame rail?(like the front spring are)Just an idea it seems posible to me.

It's called inboarding your suspension.... ok... now why?
lift?
what would be your reasoning?

It would make it less stable when hauling any amount of weight. In the rear you want your springs as far out as possible.
I would think it would make fitting a 14bolt in a J truck easier...
I was originally going to go this route, but I ended up with a 3/4 ton 14 bolt and the perches are close to the same width as the waggy, so I just built mounts lower on the side of the frame, if that makes sense.
I still think inboarding could work pretty well. I think you'll want to box the frame so it's stronger. I don't think it would make it that much more tipsy... but I have never done it. I say go for it.
I agree with tuck, inboarding shouldn't be too bad, should flex a little better, but wouldn't be quite as stable. Definately box the frame if your gonna though. It has been done before...Now if only i could find the link with the pics...
here ya go

Better flex and it would make this 14 bolt an easy swap on my j10.As wobbling side to side I figured on mounting a set of shocks out board in the area where the old mounts for the rear leafs used to be,add one more set in board and it should handle that problem......right?
Any more info or ideas would be great,as I am realy considering this.
Thanks

How you gonna mount the shocks on the outside of the frame ?Think about the wheels and tires, rubbing the shocks..

Ummm...it would increase the leverage on the axle tubes, and might make it more likely to break, but with a sturdy 14bolt, I think you'll be alright. I say go for it,and if it doesn't work out for any reason, the rest of us will know. And if it works great, then the rest of us will be making plans to do the same!
I wouldn't worry about bending tubes, think about a Wag/Chero, their frames are narrower, so springs position probably wouldn't be *that* much different.

I have done this to my truck, a 74 J10. I have yet to box the frame, but I am planning on it. It got better flex than stock but I had also put on some 4" Rusty's springs. I used rear CJ mounting brackets because they were easily available. While I was at it I got some revolver shackles, also for a CJ. My truck's not going anywhere for a while because I'm now doing some other mods to it and while it is down I'm going to box the frame and maybe put a buggy leaf setup too.

another thing:
I measured the spring perch width of my dad's 79 Dodge W200 pickup, which has dana 60's front & rear, and the axles would bolt right on to my truck (with new hardware of course).

I know the early ones were around 1.75" while the FSJs use 2.5". Also, i wouldn't want a CJ revolver on a big FSJ, huge weight difference there.

About mounting the shocks outboard,Itwould be simple .Once the leafs are in board they would be mounted in the general where the leafs once were.If the tires dont rub the leafs where they are at now then I dont think that the shocks will rub on anything.

You can do the 14ff on a j, they perches need to be welded 5/8" away from where the backing plate bolts too(the square piece with four bolt hole). 5/8 so you can fit the U bolt. And disk brakes are a must. The disk bracket must be bolted or welded so that the caliper is standing toward the back of the axle instead of slanting upward. It will hit the leafs if not. I just moved mine up alittle more, and now they tuck right in behind the tubes nicely. In my pics, they are down too far. I was worried about smacking them on a rock. Other than that, it's pretty easy. I would think either way, your welding and cutting. So 6 of one half dozen of the other. Dennis

Rear CJ springs are 2.5" so you'll need the rear spring and shackle-hangers

Couldnt I use the same brackets that the front leafs mount to then I could the old shacles that used to be on the front.
