Since I'm going to be turning my rig into a fun-mobile/street rig/off-roader without a roof and all the other goodies, I've decided to do OBA with my stock york compressor. I know that I need to turn the compressor to a vertical position. Will there be enough room under the hood to mount the compressor in that fashion, without having to do some major fab work? What will be involved in turning it vert? Can I reuse the stock brackets and such, or will new ones be in order? Also, can I use something like an old propane tank for the air tank?

Not sure about the clearance or the brackets for the York but am pretty sure a LP tank is not rated for the pressure or volume you will need to run air tools. At least not safely.
I base this solely on those LP tank conversion kits we used to do for filling tires way back when. They only held enough air to inflate two street tires to about 20 psi, just enough to get you to the next gas station. IIRC they had a pretty low capicity.

why does it have to be upright. mine wasnt. it worked fine. also go to a junk yard with a tape measurefind an air tank off a semi truck that fits between the framerails where spare tire sould be. thats where i put mine.made skidplate for it too.

You really need the york pointed up so that you can fill the compressor with 10w-30 and not have all the oil run down your lines to your tank. If you want to leave it horizontal, you really need an oil/air seperator, which is going against my "keep it cheap" philosophy.

I will probably go with a semi tank or maybe even an old compressor tank, just not sure where I'm going to put it yet. If I can find a good tank to put in my old sparetire hole, then I might just take the old tank out and put the compressor tank in there.

Brown Bear is right on about reinstalling the compressor vertical. I toasted my first York with it mounted horizontal. I had a seperator inline, but it kept pumping oil out of whatever tool I was useing anyway. You should have seen the grenaded piston rod and crankshaft on that compressor after it went BOOM! I am in the process of reinstalling it now. The boltholes in the bottom of the York line up with the bracket. The only issues I see are hood clearance {not a problem with a 2" body lift} and the upper radiator hose clearance, nothing that a universal rad hose wouldn't fix. Ive got a 10 gallon steel tank I'll let ya have for cheap............phil
