View Full Version : Should I grind this housing to make U bolt fit?

Just hung my HP 60 today, and ran the Ubolts upward with plate on top of the leafs. Instead of downward like they come stock in the fords. Anyway, on the one ubolt closest to the housing, the ubolt is a larger one cause it goes around the housing. There is a gusset shaped kinda like a triangle, that runs across the bottom. Should I grind a groove so the ubolt fits around the housing, or just let it clamp down across the gosset? I currently bolted it down right over the gosset, and it seems fine, but dont know if it will shift. But grinding might weaken the housing? Could I just tack weld around the ubolt in a few places to keep it from shifting. Wish I had some pics, but some of you prolly know what Im talking about. Thanks, Dennis

I would be worried about all that stress being on one small part of the u-bolt, rather then dispersed along the whole curve of it. The best thing to do would be to add material so there was something more for the u-bolt to rest against. And maybe put a small notch in the gusset so that the u-bolt isnt on a ramp of sorts making it want to slide over.

Sounds good. I think I will take a couple of pieces of old Ubolt, that is curved the same, cut them to fit snug up to the housing and new ubolt. Then just weld it to the new ubolt. Kinda like a brace. After spending literally thousands on it and many hours rebuilding it, I really didn't want to grind on her. Dennis

I would just grind a tiny flat spot, so the u-bolt isnt on the slope. That wont hurt strength any, as it will be very small.

i think you could grind some off the housing and be cool. you don't want to know what i did one time but it was bad but it worked great. i think it would be better for it to sit in a groove rather than allow an area for it to slip. that's a thick Great Googley MoogleyGreat Googley MoogleyGreat Googley MoogleyGreat Googley MoogleyGreat Googley Moogley piece of cast on the housing removing a chunk isn't really going to effect the structural integrity.

there is alot of material on the D60... I see nothing wrong with 'notching' the gusset for the Ubolt

I grinded a small notch and it sets in there nicley. I will prolly still weld a small curved piece to the Ubolt, just for kicks. Thanks, Dennis
