I am sure this has been beat to pieces , but here goes. 1987 GW bone stock(for now) I am looking for the best 1 1/2 to 3 inch lift. This is primarily for backroading and to run a larger tire. I was thinking Rancho "add a leaf". Any thoughts from all of you Professional FSJr's. Thanks to all for your input.

If that is all you want.. is bigger tires.... just spend $70 on a 3" bodylift

Rusty has long add a leaf's that are suppose to be better ride, short aal's tend to be stiff. With a GW you are prob still going to have some rub problems with the back at stuff, maybe a little trimming?
I agree w/RB. I wanted about 3" for similar reasons. Researched SOAs, suspension lifts and body lifts. The $67 bucks I spent at Tyres International for a performance accessories body lift kit was well worth it. The only hassel was fabbing brackets for the bumper adjustment. Radiator dropping was easy as pie. Didn't need the shift linkage extension either.
Good luck!

If you are just going to clear tires, go body lift. I did the 2" full length AAL from Rusty's, it leveled my Wag out nicely, about 2" lift in the rear and about 3" in the front. Now, I still have to add the body lift to clear a 32" tire in the front when I crank the wheel.
BTW, the add a leaf is STIFF, I like it, but if you are going for an off road thing, go with a kit that includes new springs.

Do the suspension lift. A body lift will only give you clearance from the wheel and fender wells. There is still a good chance you will be rubbing on the frame when you make too sharp of a turn. A 3" lift from any one of a number of suppliers will do just fine. I will be performing a lift on mine this fall and plan to go with Rusty's for $500. It seems to include everything and I've heard good things about them. With the lift and the fact that I have a wide-trac I can get up to 35" tires on it although I will only be putting on 34's. On a GW, a 3" lift should give you enough frame clearance for 32" tires and maybe even 33's.

You will not fit 33's on a 3" suspension lift (without rubbing BAD)... I had 4" suspension lift and 10" deep Eagles... 31's rubbed bad on the sidewalls... I added a 3" bodlift and never rubbed again.
Veepster ran a 4" lift like me (Skyjacker) and ran 33's on 15x8's and rubbed in the rearwell... so he added the 3" bodylift and never rubbed again.
31's or maybe 32's will be the best you do with 3"... either suspension or bodylift regardless.
You will not rub the frame... if you do, just adjust your turn lock adjustment screws on the knuckles... easy.
